At a virtual event today, Microsoft showed off two new Surface devices and a bunch of new accessories. The first part of the talk, however, was all about how its AI Copilot is becoming more and more built into Windows. But this event was mostly about hardware, with some business software thrown in for good measure. But that’s how things work at Microsoft these days: even the simplest hardware events have to have a Copilot angle.
Microsoft spent a lot of time telling a story about Copilot that was mostly made up of updates that had already been revealed, customer testimonials, and a lot of talk about how Copilot will make employees happier and more productive by summarising meetings and documents that employees didn’t attend or read.
“Windows 11 and Windows 365 promise a new era of AI productivity,” said Melissa Grant, who is in charge of Windows Enterprise at Microsoft. “We want to give our employees the tools they need to work faster, smarter, and more creatively, and to make the most of their work time.”
Just how is Microsoft going to do that? Users can now switch between “Work” and “Web” in Copilot on Windows 11 by adding a button. When you press the “Work” button, Copilot’s Microsoft 365 features and the company data they use are brought into the Windows screen. That’s because Microsoft wants as many people as possible to use Copilot. Windows is supposed to “deliver technology that puts you on a path to becoming an AI-centered organisation,” as Grant put it.
Microsoft also thinks that cloud PCs provided through Windows 365 will work as a surface for the Copilot. The Windows app is the right name for the app that lets you access those cloud PCs, as well as Azure Virtual Desktop and Remote Desktop. Microsoft says that since it went into test at Microsoft Ignite 2023 in November, Windows Apps have been used for more than 3 million hours. While that is a large amount, it would only take about 3,000 to 4,000 people using cloud PCs full-time during the workday to reach that mark since the service began. It says that Vodafone and Zurich Insurance Group were early users.

Microsoft also said that Copilot can now do some basic IT tasks from the chat (or at least open the right settings window for you), which is something that the company had already said a few weeks ago. And what about those Windows 365 cloud PCs? You can now change their size.
That’s pretty much it. Please press that Copilot button to sign up.
