Spotify said today that it has put a new version of its app into the App Store that shows price and feature details for its different EU plans. The update, which hasn’t been approved by Apple yet, also has a link on Spotify’s website that lets users buy monthly plans.
The European Commission fined Apple a huge €1.84 billion ($2 billion) earlier this week for acting in ways that hurt competition in the music streaming market. Merkel, who is in charge of competition in the EU, told reporters that Apple needs to stop its anti-steering actions.
“From now on, Apple will have to let music streaming app developers talk to their users freely,” she said. “They can do this in the app, by email, or in any other way.”
The Verge says that Spotify has sent in this new version with information about membership, deals, and a link to buy those things. The music company doesn’t show the prices of the different plans on the app right now. Instead, it says things like “You can’t upgrade to Premium in the app.” “We understand, it’s not ideal.”
In January, Spotify hinted at a lot of changes that would be made because of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). For example, you would be able to pay through in-app purchases and buy individual audiobooks from the app. A few days later, though, Apple released its compliance method, which made many of these changes impossible.
Firms that agree to Apple’s changes will need to pay an extra “core technology fee” for a number of files from all sources. Which could make a lot of money for companies like Spotify if a lot of people download it.
This is what Spotify called on its blog a “powerful message” that shows that not even “a monopoly like Apple” can “wield power abusively” to control how other businesses treat their customers.

Apple replied that it would be appealing the EC’s decision and that Spotify has been “the biggest beneficiary” of the App Store. According to Apple, Spotify has most of the music streaming market in Europe and doesn’t pay “Apple nothing for the services that have helped make them one of the most recognizable brands in the world.”
