Alexey Navalny’s lawyers said Monday that they have lost touch with the jailed Russian opposition leader. Navalny was thought to be locked up in a prison camp about 150 miles east of Moscow, but no one knows where he is.
Navalny was given a 19-year prison term in August after being found guilty of many crimes, including making an extremist community and giving money to extremist groups. Already, he had been in a maximum security prison for 11 and a half years on fraud and other charges that he rejects.
Some people who support Navalny say that his arrest and imprisonment are political actions meant to stop him from criticising Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Navalny’s lawyers have tried more than once to get into two prison colonies where he is thought to be because he is seriously ill, a spokesman for the family said on X on Monday. Yarmysh also said that they were told that the 47-year-old man was not at either the IK-6 or IK-7 prison camps.
“Neither IK-6 nor IK-7 responded to them on Friday or today,” Yarmysh wrote, adding that Navalny had not been seen in six days. Navalny was last locked up in the IK-6 jail colony, which is east of Moscow.
It was said that the White House was “deeply concerned” about the news that Navalny had gone missing.
“He should be let go right away. “We’re going to work with our embassy in Moscow to see how much more we can find out,” John Kirby, spokesman for the US National Security Council, told reporters on Air Force One. “He shouldn’t have been jailed in the first place.”
Yarmysh said that Navalny was supposed to show up in court on Monday through a video link. The prison told Navalny’s team that he couldn’t come to the hearing because there was a problem with the electricity in the jail.
Navalny’s Recent Bad Health Made Yarmysh Worry, She Said
“The fact that we can’t find Alexey is especially scary because he got sick in his cell last week. He got dizzy and fell to the floor.” “The staff of the colony rushed over right away, lowered the bed, laid Alexey down, and hooked him up to an IV,” she said on X.
“We don’t know what it was, but since he wasn’t eating, was locked up in a cell with no air flow, and was only allowed to walk for short periods of time, it looked like he passed out from hunger,” Yarmush said.
Putin just announced a few days ago that he will run for president again in Russia’s elections in March 2024. If he wins, he could stay in power until at least 2030.
Something That Bothers Putin
During Putin’s more than 20-year rule, Navalny was one of the biggest threats to his authority. He planned protests against the government and used his blog and social media to talk about what he saw as corruption in the Kremlin and in Russian business.
A Soviet-era nerve weapon called Novichok was used to poison the dissident, and he was taken from Russia to Germany in 2020. Navalny had to be flown from Omsk, Siberia, and woke up in a Berlin hospital after being taken there.
CNN and the group Bellingcat looked into Navalny’s poisoning and found that the Russian Security Service (FSB) was involved. The investigation found that Navalny had been being followed by the FSB’s “toxins” team of six to ten spies for more than three years.
Later, Navalny tricked one of the spies, Konstantin Kudryavtsev, into telling everyone how he was poisoned. He called Kudryavtsev and pretended to be a high-level official from Russia’s National Security Council who was in charge of looking into the poisoning operation. Kudryavtsev told him in detail how the nerve agents were put on Navalny’s clothes.
Russia says it had nothing to do with Nalvany’s poisoning. In December 2020, Putin said that the Russian security service “would have finished” the job of killing Navalny if they did want to.
When Navalny got back to Russia in January 2021, he was jailed right away on charges that he broke the terms of his probation for a fraud case that was brought against him in 2013. He also said that the charges were politically driven. He has fought against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from jail and tried to get people to oppose the war.
