He says, “This wasn’t the right time for me or North Carolina.”
The governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, dropped out of the race to be Kamala Harris’ running mate in the next election.
The New York Times said that the governor made this public by posting it on his X handle.
But it wasn’t clear what the choice was until Cooper made his statement on Monday night.
Cooper said in a statement, “I strongly support Vice President Harris’ campaign for president.” The thought of being nominated for this part made me feel good. I know she will win.
“This just wasn’t the right time for North Carolina and for me to be on a national ticket,” the Democrat from North Carolina said. “As I’ve said from the beginning, she has an outstanding list of people from which to choose, and we’ll all work to make sure she wins.”
In this case, vetting papers were sent to Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, and Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariza.
Mitch Kokai, a senior political expert at the John Locke Foundation, told Fox News that he thought Harris would get along well with North Carolina’s governor.
The analyst said that Cooper was “the brightest star of the Democrats in North Carolina in the last few years.”
Roy Cooper is likely to be seen as a good match for Kamala Harris by Democrats for more than one reason. “Cooperate helps North Carolina’s 16 electoral votes play a role in a way that other candidates do not,” Kokai said.
“Since 2000, he’s won six statewide races.” That is a great success for a Democrat in a state that has been moving to the right over the past few years.

“Cooper offers a clear demographic contrast to Harris, and he also presents a calm, sober, constrained personality that might help counter some of the criticism Harris has faced about her interactions with interviewers and the public,” Kokai said.
