A few days after the Wall Street Journal said that Apple and Meta were in talks to combine Meta’s AI models, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg said that the iPhone maker had no plans to do so.
Bloomberg says that Apple and Meta talked for a short time in March about the chance of working together. At this point, Apple was in talks with a number of companies to see if their models could work with their products.
Bloomberg said that the company dropped the plan to put Meta’s AI models on iPhones because they were worried about privacy. It was also said in the story that working with the social networking company won’t be good for Apple’s reputation, since the Cupertino-based company has repeatedly said bad things about Meta’s privacy practices.
This month, Apple launched its own set of AI features under the name Apple Intelligence. It also said it would work with OpenAI to let iPhone users use ChatGPT to ask certain questions.
But this deal isn’t the only one; Apple said it’s willing to work with other AI models to make its products smarter. The company said at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) that it will work with Google to put Gemini into use.
People may not be able to directly connect millions of devices to Meta, but the company will rely on its own apps, like Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger, which have billions of users. The company made its Meta AI robot available to a lot of people in India on Monday. India is its biggest market in the world.
