It’s 2024. No matter what, all devices should have batteries that last more than a day. As things stand, the range of gadgets is incredibly large. At this point, I would even say that the Apple Watch’s small battery is and always has been its biggest problem. At the moment, the Series 9 can run for 18 hours in normal mode and 36 hours in low power mode.
When it comes to OnePlus’s future Watch 2, it promises an amazing 100 hours “in full Smart Mode.” These are the kinds of claims that should be taken with a grain of salt until the gadget is officially shown off next week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. I would go one step further and tell people who are interested to wait until the first reviews come in.
A company blog post says they had a “three-year hiatus and a reflective pause following the OnePlus Watch 1.”
This is the kind of thing that OnePlus needs to focus on: battery. That first model had a 3,402mAh battery that said it would last up to two weeks or 25 hours without the GPS. Even back then, the most important thing about a watch didn’t impress. With Wear OS devices, it’s not hard to stand out; you just have to do something extra. This is especially true now that both Google and Samsung are making devices for the OS.
OnePlus showed that it can still do well even if it’s not the first phone on the market. All of its early smartphones had that as a theme, and the OnePlus Open showed that the company was right. One of the reviews who was really shocked by how much they liked the product was me. This isn’t really about OnePlus; it’s more of a comment on the state of consumer electronics in general.
When OnePlus talks about the early days, it says it “went back to the drawing board, driven by community feedback, to ensure the OnePlus Watch 2 delivers an exceptional user experience.” When OnePlus first came out, community input was one of the main things that set it apart. But as a business grows, it gets harder to keep up a straight line like that. Since then, the company that makes smartphones has also been officially merged into the Chinese tech giant Oppo.
Also, you don’t have to talk to smartwatch users for hours on end to know that battery life is very important. This gear is made to be worn all day and all night. There isn’t much room to charge there. It is a lot better to be able to wear a device for several days without having to think about these kinds of things. You can get a better picture of your workout and sleep habits when you don’t have to charge it every other night.

These days, three years is a very long time in the world of tech. The Watch 1 didn’t make a big difference in the world of smartwatches. It might do better in round two if it focuses on battery life in a useful way. In a category that is currently dominated by very cheap gadgets on one end and a few big names on the other, I’m not holding my breath. Still, anything that shifts the focus back to how important longer battery life is probably good for the group as a whole.
