Putting hot sauce in your lunch to keep it from getting stolen from the office fridge is like that.
It is never morally right to kill someone on purpose. But if someone at work keeps stealing your lunch, wouldn’t you get back at them?
It’s hard for artists to keep their work from being used to train AI models without their permission. Opt-out requests and do-not-scrape codes depend on AI companies to act honestly, but companies that care more about making money than protecting privacy can easily ignore these steps. For most artists, sequestering themselves offline isn’t a choice because they depend on social media for commissions and other work opportunities.
The University of Chicago’s Nightshade project gives artists a way out by “poisoning” image data, which makes it useless or bad for teaching AI models. Nightshade was created by computer science professor Ben Zhao, who said it was like “putting hot sauce in your lunch so it doesn’t get stolen from the workplace fridge.”
It’s not a joke; we’re showing that generative models are just models in general. Zhao said, “Nightshade is not meant to be the only and most powerful weapon used to destroy these companies.” Nightshade shows that these models can be broken into and that there are ways to do it. What this means is that content owners can get tougher responses than writing to Congress or screaming on social media or email.
The goal of Zhao and his team is not to destroy Big AI. Instead, they want to make tech giants pay for licensed work instead of using scraped pictures to train AI models.
He went on, “There is a right way to do this.” “The real issue here is about permission and payment.” We are only giving people who make material a way to fight back against training that isn’t theirs.
When Nightshade targets the links between text prompts, it changes the pixels in images in a way that makes AI models think they are seeing a totally different picture than a human would. Models will put “shaded” image features in the wrong category, and if they’re taught on enough “poisoned” data, they’ll start to make images that have nothing to do with the prompts. The researchers say in a technical study that is currently being reviewed by other researchers that it only takes a few hundred “poisoned” samples to mess up a Stable Diffusion prompt.

Zhao told TechCrunch, “As long as you change that association, you can make the models think that cows have four round wheels, a bumper, and a trunk.” “And when you tell them to show you a cow, they’ll show you a big Ford truck instead.”
The Nightshade team also gave some other examples. A plain picture of the Mona Lisa and a shaded picture look almost the same to humans. But AI will “see” the “poisoned” sample as a cat wearing a robe instead of a portrait of a lady.
When you ask an AI to make a picture of a dog after training it with shaded images that made it see cats, it makes horrifying hybrids that look nothing like either animal.
The effects are felt in ideas that are related, the technical study said. The messed-up “fantasy art” question was also messed up for “dragon” and “Michael Whelan,” an illustrator who specializes in fantasy and sci-fi cover art.
Zhao also led the group that made Glaze, a tool that hides AI models’ ability to “see” and figure out artistic style, so they can’t copy artists’ original work. A person might see a “glazed” realistic charcoal portrait as an abstract painting, but an AI model will see it as a realistic charcoal portrait. When told to make fine charcoal portraits, it will then make messy abstract paintings.
Zhao told TechCrunch that Glaze was a technology attack being used as a defense when the tool first came out last year. Zhao recently told TechCrunch that Nightshade isn’t a “outright attack,” but it is still going after greedy AI companies that don’t care about opt-outs. One of the companies being sued by a group of people for allegedly breaking copyright rules is OpenAI. Now, artists can choose not to have their work used to train future models.
“The issue with this [opt-out requests] is that it is the most flexible and soft kind of a request that can be made.” Zhao said, “There’s no enforcement, and no company has to keep their word.” “There are many smaller companies that aren’t well known that don’t have any limits. They are flying under the radar.” There’s no reason for them to follow those opt-out lists, and they can still use your information however they want.
Artist Kelly McKernan, who is part of the class action case against Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt, put up a picture on X that shows how they shaded and glazed a painting. The picture shows a woman with neon veins all over her body, and pixelated versions of herself are feeding off of her. By “cannibalizing the authentic voice of human creatives,” McKernan wrote, it shows how generative AI.
In 2022, when AI image generators first came out to the public, McKernan started scrolling through pictures that looked a lot like their own works. Their desire to make art was completely lost when they learned that more than fifty of their works had been stolen and used to train AI models, they told TechCrunch. They even found their mark in material made by AI. They said that using Nightshade is a safety step until there are better rules in place.
McKernan said, “It looks like there’s a bad storm outside, but I have to go to work anyway. I’m going to protect myself and use a clear umbrella to see where I’m going.” “It’s not useful, and I’m not going to stop the storm, but it will help me get to the other side, whatever it looks like.” And it tells these companies that they can keep taking without any consequences that we will fight back.
People should not be able to see most of the changes that Nightshade makes, but the team has noticed that the “shading” is easier to see on pictures with flat colors and smooth backgrounds. You can get the tool for free, and it also comes with a low strength setting that protects the quality of your images. According to McKernan, they could tell that Glaze and Nightshade changed their picture, but since they painted it, it’s “almost imperceptible.”
Christopher Bretz, an illustrator, used one of his works to show how Nightshade affected it and then posted the results on X. When I ran a picture through Nightshade’s lowest and default setting, it didn’t change the illustration much. But when I ran it through higher settings, I could see changes.
Bretz told TechCrunch, “I’ve been playing around with Nightshade all week, and I plan to use it for all of my new work and a lot of my older online portfolio.” There are some digital artists I know who haven’t shared new work in a while. I hope this tool will give them the confidence to start sharing again.
The team wrote in a blog post that artists should use both Glaze and Nightshade before putting their work online. The team is still trying how Glaze and Nightshade work together on the same image. They want to make a single tool that does both of these things available. For now, they say to use Nightshade first and then Glaze to keep the affects as subtle as possible. The team tells people not to post artwork that has only been colored and not glazed because Nightshade doesn’t protect artists from being copied.
Even watermarks and signatures added to an image’s metadata are “brittle” and can be taken off if the picture is changed. Because Nightshade changes the pixels that make up a picture, the changes will stay even if you crop, compress, screenshot, or edit the image. Zhao said that even a picture of a screen showing a dark image will make it hard to train the model.
As generative models get smarter, artists are under more and more pressure to keep their work safe and stop people from stealing it. Steg.AI and Imatag help creators claim ownership of their pictures by adding watermarks that humans can’t see. However, neither service promises to protect users from dishonest scraping. The “No AI” Watermark Generator, which came out last year, adds watermarks to work that says it was made by AI instead of by humans. The idea behind this is that datasets used to train future models will automatically remove pictures that were made by AI. Spawning.ai also has a tool called Kudurru that finds and keeps track of scrapers’ IP addresses. They can either block the IP addresses that were reported or send a different image back, like a middle finger.
Kin.art, a new tool that came out this week, does things in a different way. Nightshade and other programs that change a picture cryptographically are easier to use in model training. Kin, on the other hand, hides parts of the image and changes its metatags, which makes it harder to use.
Some people who don’t like Nightshade say that it’s a “virus” or that using it will “hurt the open source community.” Before Nightshade came out, a Discord user shared a screenshot on Reddit in which they accused Nightshade of “cyber warfare/terrorism.” Someone else on Reddit who accidentally went popular on X asked if Nightshade was legal, saying it was like “hacking a vulnerable computer system to disrupt its operation.”
It’s silly to think that Nightshade is illegal because it “intentionally disrupts the intended purpose” of a generative AI model, as the OP says. Zhao said that Nightshade is completely allowed. “Magically hopping into model training pipelines and then killing everyone,” Zhao said. Instead, the model trainers are willingly scraping images, both with and without shading, and AI companies are making money from it.
Glaze and Nightshade want to charge a “incremental price” for every piece of data that is scraped without permission, until it is no longer possible to train models on data that isn’t allowed. In an ideal world, businesses would have to license original pictures to use in training their models. This would make sure that artists agree to the use of their work and are paid for it.
It’s been done before; Getty Images and Nvidia just released a generative AI tool that was fully trained with Getty’s huge collection of stock pictures. Customers who subscribe pay a fee based on how many shots they want to make. Photographers whose work was used to train the model get a cut of the subscription fees. Wired said that payouts are based on how much of the photographer’s work was added to the training set and how well that work has done over time.
Zhao made it clear that he is not against AI and said that AI has very useful uses that aren’t so morally questionable. Improvements in AI are a reason to celebrate in the fields of education and science. He said that traditional AI has been used to make new medicines and fight climate change, while most of the marketing hype and fear about AI is really about generative AI.
“Generative AI is not needed for any of these things.” “You don’t need pretty pictures, made-up facts, or a way to talk to the AI for any of these things,” Zhao said. “It’s not an important part of most basic AI technologies.” It is true, though, that these things work so well with people. A more scientific AI, on the other hand, has basic, ground-breaking abilities and amazing uses. Big Tech has really jumped on this as an easy way to make money and get a lot more people interested.
The big names in tech, who have a lot more money and tools than academics, are mostly in favor of AI. They have no reason to give money to projects that cause problems and don’t make them any money. Zhao is strongly against making money off of Glaze and Nightshade or selling the projects’ intellectual property to a business or company. For artists like McKernan, not having to pay subscription fees is a welcome break from the usual costs of tools used in creative fields.
McKernan said, “Artists, including myself, feel like we are being taken advantage of at every turn.” “So I know we’re grateful when someone gives us something for free as a resource.”
Nightshade was made by Zhao, Shawn Shan, a Ph.D. student, and a few other graduate students. The team was paid for by funds from the university, traditional foundations, and the government. Zhao did say that the team would probably need to find a “nonprofit structure” and work with arts foundations to keep the study going. He also said that the team has “a few more tricks” left.

“For a long time, research was done just to add to what people already knew.” “But I believe there is a moral line in this case,” Zhao said. “The research on this is important because the people who are most likely to be hurt by this are often the most creative and have the fewest resources to help them.” The fight isn’t fair.
