Many people who support former President Donald Trump think that pop star Taylor Swift was working for the government to help Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. They have tried to make her look bad because of this.
This is not a good idea, according to polls. Swift is one of the most well-known people in the U.S., and these Republicans are wrong to think that the government is helping her out.
The facts are clear from a Monmouth University study that came out last week. There are 39% who like Swift, 13% who don’t like her, and 43% who don’t know what they think about her. 75% of those who had a view had a good one.
And even among Republicans, only 18% like her and 25% dislike her. In other words, more Republicans like her than don’t like her. 58% of those who had an opinion thought she was good.
A study from December at Marist College found similar numbers, if you take out the people who didn’t say anything.
A lot more people don’t like Trump than Swift. A collection of recent polls shows that people who have an opinion about him rate him 45% favourably and 55% negatively. Based on the poll, that means he has a favourable rate about 25 to 30 points lower than Swift.
This could be why Trump hasn’t played along with his supporters’ worries about Swift.
In fact, these days it’s hard to find someone more well-known than Swift. From what I can tell, her ratio of “likes” to “dislikes” is much higher than that of any other leader in the country right now.
You could say that Swift is like Oprah Winfrey today in some ways. It’s something that CNN reporter Michael Smerconish has said. Like Winfrey, Swift always seems to be in the news.
The comparison makes sense when you think about how Winfrey backed Barack Obama in the 2008 race. When people who didn’t have an opinion were taken into account, Winfrey was often as popular as Taylor Swift.
Based on one study, she may have helped Obama get about one million votes during his primary race against Hillary Clinton. In a very close race for the Democratic nomination in 2008, that might have been enough to help him win.
Winfrey helped Obama get more votes, which is one reason why many Democrats hope Swift can do the same for Biden. In the past, Swift has backed Democrats, but so far she hasn’t backed Biden’s run for in 2024.
She did, however, ask people to sign up to vote in 2018, which led to more than 30,000 new registers. The Monmouth poll found that most Americans (68% of those surveyed) agree with Swift’s call for people to vote in the 2024 election.
People who support Trump may also be after Swift because she has backed left causes in the past. Travis Kelce, her boyfriend and an NFL tight end, has done ads for Covid-19 shots, which many Republicans also don’t like.
But it’s a huge leap of logic to think that Swift is secretly being helped by the government after saying she supports Democrats. Most people in the US won’t make that jump.
A little over one in six Americans (18%) say they believe such a story is real. That does look like a big number. There are, however, 73% of Americans who believe it is not true.
In fact, 18% of Americans will accept almost anything, especially if it has something to do with their political party. CNN polling found that between 17% and 27% of Americans said Obama was possibly or definitely born outside of the United States. He was born in Hawaii, of course.
Like those who believe the “birther” story about Obama, most of those who believe the one about Swift are on the right. Some Republicans (32% of those polled) said there was a secret government plan to make Swift more powerful. Only 6% of Democrats thought the same thing. That’s less than the number of Americans who believe the Earth is flat or that the government faked the moon landing.
The truth is that most Americans who feel something about Swift like her. There hasn’t been any kind of backlash against her or people who are connected to her.
These days, Swift has only helped other artists become more famous. When she started dating her boyfriend, his show went viral. NFL ratings for the most recent Super Bowl were all-time highs. A big boost came from women aged 18 to 24 (a key Swift group).
It would be a big mistake for any Republican to vote against Swift.
