No matter what the latest episode of season 2 said, Loki Season 3 will happen in the future, but not in the usual way. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Hiddleston’s role as Loki took him on a wonderful trip. The first Loki changed a lot. He started out as a bad guy in 2011’s Thor and gave up his image as the God of Mischief to die for his brother Thor in Avengers: Infinity War. Once that was done, it was given to the Loki version that would become the popular Loki series on Disney+. The end of Loki season 2 marked the end of one of the best character arcs in the MCU. Hiddleston’s character became a powerful being.
Loki’s best title is no longer “God of Mischief.” The character changed from being selfish to being selfless in an amazing way. He now condemns himself to a life of solitude by keeping an eye on all the different threads of the universe by himself. Because of that effort, Loki became the MCU’s God of Stories. However, because of how he ended the series, it’s not clear if he will come back to the MCU. Still, Loki season 3 will be coming to the MCU in the next few years through a big project, even if the main character doesn’t come back.
MCU Replaces Loki Season 3 with Avengers: Doomsday:
When Loki season 2 first came out, it showed a lot about Kang and all of his different forms. This made Avengers 5, which was then called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, seem like a natural follow-up to the Disney+ show. The main bad guy in the Multiverse Saga, Kang the Conqueror, was played by Jonathan Majors for the first time in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania, but he had already played a version of the character in Loki season 1. In the second season of the MCU show, Majors came back as He Who Remains and played Victor Timely, a different version of Kang that added to the story of the MCU’s main bad guy.
But since the MCU cut ties with Jonathan Majors, these plans seem to have changed. Avengers 5 has been renamed Avengers: Doomsday, and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is now the main character instead of Kang. At first glance, this may seem to change the plot of the fifth Avengers movie, but it looks like this change will need to depend on Loki more.
In Loki season 2, the Time Variance Authority is actively looking for different versions of Kang. If they are successful, it would be easiest for the series to explain Kang’s story ending instead of making him the main villain in Avengers 5. This method solves a possible problem for the story while also bringing everything closer to the existing Multiverse Saga lore. This is because the MCU needs to deal with the Council of Kangs but doesn’t seem to be able to directly do so since all the variants were played by Majors.
Second, the MCU needs to focus on parts of its multiverse story that don’t depend on Kang as much, which makes it more logical to use the TVA more. This is especially true since Deadpool and Wolverine made the TVA a central part of the movie franchise and brought back Loki’s Hunter B-15. Indeed, Deadpool & Wolverine’s huge box office success means that the ideas presented in Loki that it uses, like the TVA, the Void, and Alioth, are now pretty well known, which will make it even easier for the MCU to use them in the future.
Loki Season 2 Mysteries the MCU Still Needs to Solve:
Loki season 2 did a great job of tying up all the major plot threads and giving Hiddleston’s Loki the right ending if the actor is done playing the character. However, there were some loose ends that the MCU could fill in in future movies. At the end of the series, Sylvie’s story was left very open. The MCU needs to show what kind of life Sylvie has chosen for herself since Loki gave her the power to be free. She is one of the most important characters in the group.
Loki season 2 also left off a big open end: what happened to Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s character Ravonna Renslayer? That person was sent to the Void, which is where everything that the TVA cut down went. Renslayer was a big part of Loki season 2, but as the show got closer to its end, she was mostly forgotten about. Renslayer’s end in the Void was only shown for a short time. While Deadpool and Wolverine looked into the Void more, Renslayer wasn’t in any of the scenes that happened there. This meant that her fate and future were still a secret.
How Changes to Kang Might Take Loki Season 2 to the Next Level:
The MCU cut ties with Kang actor Jonathan Majors in December 2023 after he was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault. It’s clear that the franchise will have to change in order to avoid the major roles that Majors’ Kang versions were supposed to play. It makes sense that Loki and the events of Loki season 2 would become even more important, since they were the most famous and well-known multiverse exploration in recent MCU history.
Loki’s job as keeper of the multiverse makes it easy for the MCU to change any facts they want about Kang, or even to get rid of him completely. The MCU doesn’t want to focus too much on one of its Disney+ shows so that people who don’t watch the TV shows can still enjoy movies like Avengers: Doomsday. However, taking a look at what made Loki so popular would still be a good idea while the restructuring is going on.
Loki also shows how the MCU’s universe starts to branch out, which makes it very important for setting up Avengers: Doomsday. The Fantastic Four: First Steps will take place in a different universe, which means that the main comic enemies of Doctor Doom will be introduced. This naturally follows on from the ending of Loki season 1, which sees the multiverse grow, and the ending of Loki season 2, which sees him protect these other universes.
Could There Be a Loki Season 3?
Loki said that the Multiverse War would happen in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but it’s not likely that Loki will actually come back. Luke Cage director Kevin Wright told Phase Zero that he would “love to continue to work with this team that made these two seasons of this show.” “I would love to find a way of… if this was our Breaking Bad, what’s our Better Call Saul?” the producer asked. Instead of making Loki season 3, he would like to make a side show.
Right now, it doesn’t look like Loki will have a third season, but it’s also not impossible. Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, told Variety in April 2024, “I honestly don’t know… I am so proud of where we landed in season 2” when asked if there would be a third season of Loki. He was a lost and broken person, but he was given a second chance and learned so much about life that he now gives up his own safety to protect others. It has been an honor.
This also means that Loki season 3 probably won’t happen, but Hiddleston’s words do open the door for another chapter or a spinoff show that successfully continues this story, as Kevin Wright talks about. But because there are so many other projects in the works, it doesn’t look like either of these things will happen any time soon. This makes it more likely that Avengers: Doomsday will act as a kind of Loki season 3 for the MCU timeline and its Multiverse Saga story.
