X said today that it will now label profiles that are parodies or comedy to make them stand out from other accounts. People, including newsreaders, have in the past thought that posts from fake accounts were real comments made by real people or organisations.
X said that the label would show up on posts and users alike.
“We’re adding profile labels to parody accounts so that it’s easy to tell them apart from other accounts and their content on our platform.” It said in a post, “We made these labels to make things clearer and to make sure that users don’t get the wrong idea that these accounts belong to the real thing that is being imitated.”
A few reverse engineers told us in November that X was working on these kinds of signs.
At the moment, accounts on X have to add the name themselves. That’s possible if they go to Settings and Privacy > Your account > Account information and choose “Parody, commentary, and fan account.”
“Parody, Fan, and Commentary (PCF) labels are chosen by users on X to show that the account’s profile picture is of another person, group, or organisation to talk about, make fun of, or share information about that entity.” The description of the label says, “This label sets these accounts apart so they don’t confuse other people or falsely imply any affiliation.”
The social network also said that it would soon share information about when these marks will have to be on all parody accounts.

According to the company’s authenticity policy, fake accounts are not allowed. However, the site does allow parody, commentary, and fan accounts as long as they follow the rules.
