After being questioned recently, Sen. Katie Britt talked about a story she told during her response to Vice President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech on Sunday.
Britt gave a sharp answer in which she criticised Biden’s policies on the border and immigration. She also told the story of a woman who was sexually assaulted in a trafficking operation run by drug cartels. The Alabama member said the victim told her the abuse started when she was 12 years old.
But the story made people wonder right away about the timing and other facts. According to Sean Ross, a spokesman for Britt, the lawmaker was talking about a story from a woman who was sexually attacked in Mexico, not the United States. Also, she was harmed from 2004 to 2008, which is more than ten years before Biden became president.
Fox News Sunday reporter Shannon Bream asked Britt if she meant “to make it seem like this terrible thing happened under President Biden’s watch.”
“No, Shannon,” Britt said, and then she went on to say more bad things about Biden’s management of the southern border and immigration in the U.S.
He said, “I went to the border three times in my first 100 days in office.” “And then I asked for the honest truth when I was there.” I was ready to sit down. I asked the border patrol agents, the people there, and people who had been harmed by drug gangs in the past, “Tell me what it’s like.” Please tell me what to do. Tell me what I need to know.
When asked about the story she gave in her State of the Union speech, Britt told Fox News, “I very clearly said I spoke to a woman who told me about being trafficked when she was 12.” Okay, I didn’t say a kid. I did not say “a young woman.”
Britt’s answer to Biden’s speech touched on a number of important issues for conservatives, such as passing border laws and addressing what some call “reckless spending in Washington.” But even some Republicans have said bad things about her response, which she gave from a kitchen, because of how she delivered it and where she did it.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was asked about Britt’s answer on ABC’s ‘This Week’. He said, ‘I’ll let her explain the lies, but I think it shows the bigger problem’.
“She’s a United States senator, and the United States Senate right now could be acting to help secure the southern border.”
The National Sexual attack Hotline (800.656.HOPE) and online.rainn.org are ways for survivors of sexual attack to get help from RAINN.
