Showrunner Speaks Out on Good Trouble’s End
When Good Trouble was cancelled, it made a lot of people feel a lot of different things, both fans and people who helped make the show. The showrunner and executive producer, Joanna Johnson, shared thoughts that paint a picture of a team that was truly linked and had ties that went beyond the set. She talked about how the group had grown up together and how sad it was to say goodbye to a project that had been a big part of their lives for over ten years. “They’ve worked together for over 10 years, since they were 17 and 19.” They’re very close friends because they grew up together. They look a lot like sisters. They said goodbye in a very moving way.”

“We were done filming Season 5 in June.” We finished the show, the ending, and everything else because we were sure we would make it to Good Trouble Season 6, which I think was the plan. Following that, the blows were very hard and lasted a long time. It’s hard for companies and networks to make money these days, and things have changed. And I think it was around October that I heard our truck wasn’t always a sure thing…Before the holidays, Simran Sethi, EVP of Programming and Content Strategy at ABC Studios, called me and said she was sorry that they wouldn’t be able to make any more episodes of Good Trouble. She had been fighting so hard for us and deserves a huge thank you.”
Even though people were shocked and disappointed at first, the people who worked on Good Trouble wanted to give the show the proper send-off it earned. In a very unusual move, scenes from season 5 that weren’t used were suggested to be used for the end, along with new scenes to wrap things up. “We had some extra money left over from Season 5, and I asked if we could use it to film some more scenes so that we could…at least see the end of the series and a proper goodbye. They let us do it because she fought so hard for us. It was our choice how long it would last, she said. It was great. Then we just had to wait for Maia Mitchell to get out of a show and be free. Because it airs on Tuesday, we didn’t have much time to post. We shot it for two days a few weeks ago. I cut some stories that we were trying to boot and cliffhanger on for Season 6 because they didn’t make sense anymore. I opened up the ending that we had. That last family Coterie dinner and the last scene on the roof are why I wrote these new scenes. People from our great cast and team got to get back together and have two days to properly say goodbye. It was just beautiful.”

If there had been a season 6, it’s possible that the cast from season 5 would have come back to play the same parts. Johnson said he understood worries about President Joe Biden’s age and performance, but he stressed how important it was to pick the best choice over the perfect one. This theme would have been presented in a subtle way in the last season, showing that Good Trouble is serious about dealing with real-life problems and getting people to have deep talks about them.

The fifth season of Good Trouble had an average of 88,000 watchers and a 0.03 rating in the 18–49 age group.
