The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity, gave Juho Lee a Career Award for his outstanding leadership and technical contributions in standardizing wireless communication. Lee is a fellow at Samsung Electronics’ advanced research and development hub Samsung Research (SR).
Lee got the first-ever Excellence in Supporting Standardization for Communications Award from the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) this year. This was given to him in honor of his leadership and key role in the development and standardization of global mobile communication technologies. Lee was the only person to receive the award, which was given to recognize his outstanding contributions to the business.
The winners of the IEEE ComSoc Career Awards are chosen by a very strict voting process. For two months, 14 judges carefully consider each candidate. Awards were given out at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on December 5 at the 2023 IEEE Global Communications (GLOBECOM) meeting.
Lee has been in charge of study and standardization in the field of mobile communication technology since 2000, when the first 3G smartphones hit the market. Lee was vice-chair of the Radio Access Network Working Group 1 (RAN WG1) at the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a global group for standardizing mobile communications, from February 2003 to August 2009. In this role, he helped make 4G LTE technology more consistent. Lee was named an IEEE Fellow in 2018. This is an honor given only to the most respected IEEE members who have done truly amazing things.
His words, “It is an honor to be named the first winner of the IEEE ComSoc Excellence in Supporting Standardization for Communications Award,” “In the future, I will keep researching, developing, and standardizing new mobile communication technologies like 5G and 6G.”
Lee is the latest high-level Samsung official to receive an IEEE ComSoc Career Award, which is a very honor. In 2004, the IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Industry Leader Award was given to Ki-Tae Lee, who used to be Vice Chairman of Samsung and was a key figure in the development of Samsung’s Anycall line of cell phones. The same award was given to former Samsung Vice Chairman Jong-Kyun Shin in 2016. He made the first color phone.
Samsung Research has two chairs and four vice-chairs in the 3GPP. It is a leader in standardizing mobile communication technologies. The next generation of communication will be called “The Next Hyper-Connected Experience for All,” and Samsung wrote a 6G white paper about it in July 2020. Samsung and the experts at Samsung Research are working hard to make 6G available to everyone around 2030.
