The biggest event of the year for Apple brings new iPhones, changes to AI, and other hardware.
The iPhone 16 lineup and a bunch of AI-related iOS 18 changes came with Apple’s biggest event of the year. Like at WWDC in June, Apple Intelligence was the star of the show at this year’s event. Apple also announced a lot of gear that people were looking forward to, like the new iPhone 16, AirPods 4, the Apple Watch Series 10, and more. The “Glowtime” event from Apple began at 10 a.m. PT and was broadcast live from the company’s offices in Cupertino. You can watch a recording of the whole event here.
It remains to be seen if Monday’s announcements will lead to or delay a “supercycle” of customers buying the new iPhone 16 lineup. However, it is clear that Apple will use AI as a central part of its sales pitch going forward. iPhone 16
It’s not a surprise that CEO Tim Cook said the iPhone 16 “has been designed for Apple Intelligence from the ground up.” The new colours and tweaked designs were shown off at an Apple event. The new iPhone 16 models have a camera button on the side that lets you use the camera physically. They also have a new A18 chip that Apple says makes the iPhone 16 up to 30% faster than the iPhone 15. The base price for the iPhone 16 with 128GB of storage is $799. How To Use The Camera Button On The iPhone 16
Bryan Heater, our editor, said that Apple “feels a lot more bullish about buttons these days.” And after the Apple event was over, he got to see for himself that the Camera Control button does make using an iPhone better, if only for a short time.
Camera Control is like any other new feature: it takes a while to get the hang of it. Figuring out how much pressure to use to switch between functions is the hardest part. But that’s what makes it different from other camera buttons. It’s not just a way to take a picture in the camera app. “It also lets you move around inside the app,” he wrote. Intelligence From Apple
Apple Intelligence was first shown at WWDC. It is mostly described as a secret large language model that works behind the scenes to make apps and features better. In many of its WWDC presentations, Apple talked about Intelligence’s ability to search through inboxes and show email summaries. alerts were also changed to include summaries, and the most important alerts were pushed to the top of the stack. Apple called its Intelligence updates “a new era for Siri.” They say Siri can now understand requests that aren’t given very clearly, help users with specific tasks on the iPhone, and become aware of what’s happening on the phone through the screen.
It will be available as a beta in the U.S. in the fall, and in December, it will be available in a number of other countries with English translations. For 2025, the goal is to add more languages, such as Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish.
Apple also has a more in-depth visual search feature, which is powered by Apple Intelligence and combines the features of a reverse image search with text recognition. This lets you add information about an event to your calendar from a picture or get information about a restaurant from a photo of it.
In the end, one of the biggest questions about Apple’s claims that Intelligence could make using a lot of different products easier is a simple one: Is Siri useful these days?
iOS 18 Comes Out On September 16
We got our first look at iOS 18 when the beta version came out earlier this year. However, the original rollout of the version without Apple Intelligence’s features wasn’t very impressive. As we already said, many of the most-anticipated AI features won’t come out until later in 2024. However, iOS 18 still has other updates for messaging and the control centre that you can read about in more detail here before its September 16 launch date. All iPhones, including and after the iPhone XR and SE (second gen), can get the update. You can find out more about how compatible your device is with iOS 18 here.
How To Use The Camera On The iPhone 16
The camera control button is one of the most noticeable changes to the bodies of the iPhone 16 models. Clicks and other physical movements can be used to control the camera. Light presses show clear previews, while a hard click can take a picture. You can change the knobs and settings by running your finger along the button. Here is a list of all the things that the camera tool can do.
The iPhone 16 Pro And Pro Max
More expensive iPhones from Apple will have bigger screens. The Pro has a 6.3-inch screen, and the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch screen, making them the biggest iPhone screens to date. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have a new A18 Pro chip, a better camera with faster shutter speeds, the ability to record 4K video at 120 frames per second, and other changes that you can read about here. The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 and the 16 Pro Max at $1,119. You can buy both on Friday, and they will both be in stores on September 20.
The 10th Apple Watch
Apple began by showing off the Watch in honour of the line’s 10th anniversary. The Apple Watch Series 10 line got a number of updates, such as a new look with rounded edges and a different aspect ratio, along with Apple’s first wide-angle OLED screens. The Series 10’s screen is up to 40% brighter when viewed from an angle. At 9.7mm, it’s the smallest Apple Watch ever made, and it’s also up to 10% lighter than the past models. As expected, AI was a big part of the Apple Watch Series 10 reveal. For example, a new pictures watch face uses AI to choose which photos to show on the screen, and machine learning is used to improve translation tools.
An update for Apple Watches that can detect sleep apnoea is also on the way, but it needs to be approved by the FDA first. It will be added to both the Series 10 and Series 9 watches. The Apple Watch Series 10 comes out on September 20 and costs $399.

Apple Watch Sport
Apple has long marketed the Ultra as a device for exercise fans, with features like personalised workouts, running track detection, live bike rides, and more. After building up to a show, Apple announced that there will not be an Apple Watch Ultra 3 at this time. Instead, they added a new satin black colour to the Ultra 2.
AirPods 4
While the shape has been changed, Apple says the new AirPods 4 are the “most comfortable AirPods ever.” They have a new A2 chip inside. Personalised Spatial Audio is coming to the AirPods 4. Machine learning will also be added so Siri can understand when you shake your head or nod in answer to a question. On September 20, the new AirPods 4 will also be available. They will start at $129, and for $179, they will have active noise cancelling. Read all about the changes to the AirPods here.
The AirPods Pro 2
Three things were emphasised in the updates for the AirPods Pro 2: protection, education, and help. Hearing protection will be added as a safety measure and turned on by default to block out background noise. This will be controlled by machine learning. As a way to raise awareness, Apple is adding a hearing test that owners can take whenever they want.
And finally, hearing aid features are being released for people whose hearing tests show that they might benefit from hearing aid features. Apple says that the FDA will be okay with these features “soon,” and fixes for iOS should be coming out in the fall.
AirPods Max 16
Several small changes were made to the AirPods Max during the Apple Event. USB-C was added, and the updated headphones will come in a number of new colours starting September 20 for the same price of $549. Read the whole thing here.
iPhones That Cost Less (in India)
People in the United States who follow Apple will be familiar with the prices of the iPhone 16 lineup. But Apple fans in India will be able to save about 15,000 rupees, which is about $178, by switching from the iPhone 15 lineup. India dropped its duties on electronics imports, and Apple is now making more products in the country. This led to a discount for the 15 models that were already sold there.
