The latest fight between Apple and Epic Games, the company that makes Fortnite, doesn’t seem to be over yet.
Apple’s rules about how to split profits in the App Store have been a problem for Epic for years. Apple was sued by Epic for antitrust violations last year, but that case was thrown out. In March, the Department of Justice and 17 state attorneys general filed a new claim against Apple that shared many of the same complaints.
In Europe, the new Digital Markets Act seemed to let Epic open its own Epic Games Store on iOS and bring Fortnite back to the platform while also giving Apple lower fees. But Apple reportedly turned down the games store twice because it had too many features that were the same as its own App Store. In particular, the “install” and “in-app purchase” buttons were seen as too similar.
Epic complained about Apple’s “arbitrary, obstructive” rejections in public on Friday and said it had told European regulators about its problems. Apple then accepted the games store, but said Epic would need to make changes in a future update.
Everything okay? Not quite. After that, Epic said it was “disputing” Apple in a post. Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic, wrote that the story had “taken a turn towards the absurd.”
Sweeney said, “Apple is now telling reporters that this approval is only temporary and that they want us to change the buttons in the next version. This would make our store less standard and harder to use.” “We’re going to fight this.”

That probably means Epic won’t make any more changes to its game shop. We’ll wait and see if the company sticks to its guns and how Apple reacts.
