Fans have been waiting for an official word on when Dragon Ball Super Season 2 of the series will start airing. But we haven’t heard anything about DBS in seven years. After that, Toei Animation made movies like Super Hero and Broly to keep fans happy, but now fans are begging for the series to come back with a full-on continue.
Since Daima’s great run, people have been hoping that they will hear something about DBS coming back one day. But a recent post on social media from Toei Animation has made fans worry about what will happen with the anime series.
Dragon Ball Super Season 2 Wrapped Up Over 7 Years Ago:
Episode 131, “A Miraculous Conclusion!,” is the last episode of Dragon Ball Super. Thank you, Goku! “Until We Meet Again!” came out for the first time on March 25, 2018. And even though it’s been over 7 years, Dragon Ball Super’s last episode is still amazing. Fans often forget how hard and full of problems the anime really was because it ended on such a high note. The ending is what most people think of when they say how much they love Dragon Ball Super Season 2.
Goku vs. Jiren in Perfected Ultra Instinct was one of the most exciting fights in Dragon Ball history. Fans had been waiting months for it. After this fight, Goku’s body surprisingly broke down from stress before he could deliver the final blow, giving viewers one more fight to enjoy. Even though Ultra Instinct got a lot of attention, this fight was even better. As a result of having to trust each other, Goku and Frieza fight Jiren together in the best animated Dragon Ball fight ever made for TV. In a shocking turn of events, Super has them sacrifice their lives to save their universe, making Android 17 the winner of the Tournament of Power.
When Dragon Ball Super finished, it left people wanting more, and not just because the last few episodes set a new standard for how good shows should be. Even though there were no cliffhangers or unfinished plots, fans still wanted to see more of some of the storylines. At the show’s end, Goku had never beaten Beerus or perfected Ultra Instinct. Vegeta had never been to Universe 6, and there was no information about the universes that Zeno erased in the past. Frieza’s empire was also restored, but there was no sign of what the resurrected tyrant would do next. Even though Dragon Ball Super: Broly touched on this last point, there is still a lot that anime fans only want to see.
The Real Reasons We May Never See Dragon Ball Super Season 2:
Some Dragon Ball Super Season 2 fans might not understand why there hasn’t been a new season in seven years and why one isn’t even being made right now. Because there are a lot of manga books that could be turned into anime, Dragon Ball is still the most famous anime series in the world, and Dragon Ball DAIMA shows that Toei Animation can still make a good Dragon Ball anime. Sadly, nothing is ever that easy in real life, unlike in Dragon Ball, where everything is easy. There are many stories that could be turned into Dragon Ball Super Season 2, but it wouldn’t even come close to Season 1’s 131 episodes.
Dragon Ball Super Season 2 couldn’t have more than 50 episodes, and that doesn’t count the filler episodes. That’s because there are 45 chapters of original stories and possible movie versions of Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The reason for this is that manga chapters and anime episodes are written at different speeds. Usually, two or three chapters are turned into one episode. The anime would have to follow the manga’s lead, so it wouldn’t be able to do its own thing like Season 1. It may not sound like a big deal, and I’m sure a lot of Dragon Ball Super fans would be happy with a season 2 with 50 episodes, but this is the least of our worries.
At the start of Dragon Ball Super’s run in 2015, anime on TV was very different from what it is now. Back then, it was usual for popular anime, especially Shonen, to air once a week for a long time. Fans knew their limits, but they were ready for fluff episodes and episodes with bad animation. Weekly cartoons that go on for a long time have all but disappeared, except for One Piece (which is currently on its first ever break) and low-budget comedies. All types of cartoons now air only during certain times of the year. It would be nice if this changed because of the terrible working conditions, but it’s really just about money.
Most of the time, making weekly ongoing anime is no longer profitable, and small batches of high-quality episodes are now preferred over making a lot of episodes that aren’t constant. These factors, along with the high cost of showing shows on Japanese TV, make it less likely that Dragon Ball Super will get a season 2. Due to being the most well-known anime series in the world, Dragon Ball will always make a lot of money, whether it’s from movies, video games, or products.
There’s no financial reason to make a high-quality, very expensive of Dragon Ball Super season 2 since the brand is famous whether there’s an anime or not. That’s all there is to Dragon Ball DAIMA. It started out as a small web series like Super Dragon Ball Heroes, but it grew into something bigger. Add to that the fact that Dragon Ball is now legally owned by several different companies after Akira Toriyama’s death, and there are just too many things that are against a Dragon Ball Super Season 2 ever happening.
Uncertainty Looms Over the Future of Dragon Ball Super Season 2:
Fans want to see Dragon Ball Super back on TV along with all the original shows like Daima, which makes sense. They want to see what’s canon to the book series. In spite of this, Shueisha and Iyoku are still arguing about who owns the rights to the Dragon Ball comics. And, sadly, Dragon Ball Super won’t have a clear future until the dispute between the two parties is over.
Akio Iyoku, who used to be editor-in-chief at Shueisha and was friends with Toriyama, quit the company in 2023 after having a fight with it. He started his own business called Capsule Corporation Tokyo and got permission from Toriyama to be in charge of Dragon Ball projects. Because Shueisha still thinks they own the rights to the Dragon Ball IP, this didn’t go over well with them. Unfortunately, things got worse after Toriyama died, and it’s still not clear who will be in charge of future Dragon Ball projects.
Toei owns the rights to make Dragon Ball animated shows, but they can’t use what happened in Super until Shueisha says it’s okay. Moving forward, things could go either way. To begin, Toei is only allowed to work on the original Dragon Ball series after Daima under Akio Iyoku. However, these stories will not be canon to Super. Second, Toei might be able to get permission to work on the Super content after all. But that won’t be possible until the lawsuit between Shueisha and Iyoku is over.
Dragon Ball Super Season 2 Manga Is a Must-Read for Anime-Only Fans:
Just about anyone who wants to know more about Dragon Ball Super should read the manga with the same name. For die-hard Dragon Ball fans, this may seem like the obvious thing to do, but those who really read the manga may not know how small of a group they are. Most Dragon Ball Super Season 2fans are just regular anime fans who may know there is a manga version but don’t want to read it.
The Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga and the Granolah the Survivor Saga are two major storylines in the Dragon Ball Super manga that haven’t been turned into anime yet. The manga also took ideas from the 2022 movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and added a lot of new material to them. Readers are looking forward to the start of the long-awaited Black Frieza Saga when the manga comes back from its current break.
The Dragon Ball Super manga-only stories aren’t always very good, but fans who can’t wait for Dragon Ball Super Season 2 should read them anyway. As far as the series goes, the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga feels most like Dragon Ball Z. The Super Hero Saga/High School Saga is a huge improvement over the movie version, and even though it has a lot of problems, fans of the Dragon Ball Super anime should still enjoy the Granolah the Survivor Saga.
Dragon Ball Super Season 2will never happen, so the only way for fans to see more of the show is to read the manga. All of the Dragon Ball content that fans have loved over the past ten years comes from the original Dragon Ball Super anime. However, it’s time to move on and accept that Season 2 will never happen. It’s time to read the rest of the Dragon Ball Super manga, because the next big Dragon Ball project is about to be revealed.
