All eyes are on how the new Trump administration in the U.S. will deal with China Tech in the coming years. In the meantime, one of the biggest apps to come out of the country has been hacked by its northern neighbor.

Due to concerns for national security, Canada has directed that ByteDance’s operations in Canada be shut down. This includes the offices of TikTok Technology Canada, Inc. The risks don’t apply to the app itself—people can still download, use, and make content for TikTok, and businesses can still put ads on it. The country’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, said in a statement, “The choice to use a social media app or platform is a personal choice.”

The statement didn’t say anything else about the risks to security. But the company has been under fire for years because of how it deals platform users’ data. Different critics say that China collects user data in ways that can’t be fully checked. TikTok has said over and over that this is not true.

Parhlo World was told by TikTok that the closing will affect “hundreds” of jobs in Canada. It’s going to file an appeal.

A representative said in a statement, “Today’s shutdown order will destroy hundreds of well-paying local jobs and shut down TikTok’s Canadian offices. This is not in anyone’s best interest.” “We are going to court to fight this order.” The TikTok platform will stay open so that creators can find fans, people can try new things, and companies can grow.

A lot of new jobs were being filled by the company recently in operations, tech, and marketing in many places across the country.

One number says that about 15 million people in Canada use TikTok, which is about 41% of the population. eMarketer says that people aged 18 to 24 are more interested, which is in line with how it’s used elsewhere. But kids love TikTok too, and that study doesn’t look at them. There are worries about the mental health of children, which makes the topic itself controversial.

Even though TikTok is very famous, it has been in hot water in Canada for a while now. This new development came about because of a study of national security under the “Investment in Canada” Act. Canada stopped letting people use TikTok on all government computers in February 2023, which led to that review. That ban is still in place.

The unstable state of the company in the country may have also affected how it has added more services there. TikTok Shop, the company’s in-app store where users can buy and sell things, wasn’t supposed to come out in Canada until the end of 2023, but it still hasn’t. There, too, the Creator Rewards Program, which pays producers, has not yet gone live.

Canada isn’t the only country trying to control TikTok.

Not only is TikTok having problems in other countries, but the app is also being looked at more closely in relation to social media in general. Australia’s government just yesterday said they want to ban all social media for kids younger than 16 years old.

National security and TikTok got a lot of attention from governments around the world during the last Trump administration. That’s when the President proposed banning the app in the country, where it has 170 million users, unless its operations there were split off and sold to a U.S. company. Even though it’s been four years, that case is still going on. TikTok is challenging a signed order to sell its U.S. app business by January 2025.

Since Trump, oddly, changed his mind over the summer, no one knows what will happen next. “I’m for TikTok because you need competition,” he told them in July, after they joined the app.Canada shuts down TikTok offices because of safety concerns, but the app will still work
