A Story Says That Google’s Ceo Tells Workers to Move Faster and “Stay Scrappy” as We Enter a Key Year in Ai

According to CNBC, at a planning meeting earlier this month, top Google executives talked about the company’s goals for 2025. “I think it’s really important we internalize the urgency of this moment, and need to move faster as a company.”

At the beginning of this month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and other top executives attempted to set the stage for 2025, which they see as a crucial year, especially when it comes to AI.

CNBC got audio of a strategy meeting on December 18 in which Pichai repeatedly told workers to “stay scrappy” while he talked about regulatory and competitive challenges and emphasized how important AI was.

He said, “I believe 2025 will be very important.” “I believe it is very important that we understand how quickly we need to move as a company right now.” There is a lot at stake. These are times that are bothersome. We need to keep working hard in 2025 to get the most out of this technology and solve real user problems.

Google didn’t say anything about the CNBC story right away.

Pichai also said that Google was facing more legal attention after losing an antitrust case earlier this year involving its search business. The Justice Department wants Google to sell its Chrome browser business and is also suing the company over its online ad technology.

He said that the rising pressure was because technology was having a bigger effect on society in general. “So more than ever, through this moment, we have to make sure we don’t get distracted,” he said.

Not only is Google rushing to improve its AI, but OpenAI and Perplexity, two competitors, are also getting into the search game.

The AI-powered Gemini app is part of “building big, new business,” which Pichai said is a top goal. He also said that making it bigger for customers will be “our biggest focus next year.”

Based on what he told CNBC, “there is strong momentum with the Gemini app, especially over the last few months.” “But we have some work to do in 2025 to close the gap and establish a leadership position there as well.”

A cofounder of Google’s DeepMind named Demis Hassabis said that Gemini will “turbo charge” and that goods will “evolve massively” over the next year or two.

CNBC said that Josh Woodward, the head of Google Labs, also showed off a code assistant, an AI-powered note-taking app, and an AI-powered Chrome extension for multitasking.

Even though Google is facing more competition, Liz Reid, the company’s vice president of search, played down the negativity at Fortune’s Brainstorm AI conference in San Francisco earlier this month. She said that the key is to use more AI for “effortless” search, which lets more people ask questions.

“There are not just billions of questions that people come to Google for, but billions of questions that people don’t even ask,” she said. “It’s too hard for them to ask, though.” They don’t ask because they’re not sure they’ll get an answer.

In the past few weeks, Google has also caused a lot of excitement in the new field of quantum computing by announcing a big breakthrough.

Google’s Willow, a new quantum chip that did better on an advanced test than even the world’s best supercomputer, shocked the tech world just days before the 2025 strategy meeting.

“This is the most convincing prototype for a scalable logical qubit built to date,” wrote Hartmut Neven in a blog post on December 9. Neven is the founder and lead for Google Quantum AI. “It’s a strong sign that very large quantum computers can be built and used.”
