The New York Times and local news sites say that an explosion at a hotel in Fort Worth, Texas hurt at least 21 people.
The blast happened on Monday afternoon at the Sandman Signature Hotel in the city’s downtown area. The hotel is in a 102-year-old building and opened in March 2023. Lucky for us, no deaths have been recorded yet. Someone was said to be lost, but they have since been found.
14 people were taken to hospitals, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says that one is in critical condition and four are in dangerous condition. The others allegedly got minor injuries, and one of them went to the hospital on their own.
Images and video from the scene show that the ground floor of the building has a lot of damage. According to the Star-Telegram, the explosion “blew out windows on the first and second floors of the 20-story hotel, sending glass and other debris into the streets.” The event mostly likely took place in the kitchen of Musume, a restaurant in the basement that wasn’t open for business yet on Monday night. There were three of its workers who were hurt.
Musume co-founder Josh Babb said, “All of us at Musume are devastated by the terrible explosion that happened this afternoon at the Sandman Signature Hotel, which is where our restaurant is found.” Musume was closed during the explosion, which was a good thing because there weren’t many people eating there and not many people working. Three people who work at Musume were hurt, but they are safe and being treated in the hospital.
The Star-Telegram talked to Musume worker Josè Mira, who came out of the rubble and said, “Everything fell. The walls, the floor, everything.” “I’m lucky to be alive.”
At a news conference, Craig Trojacek, a spokeswoman for the Fort Worth Fire Department, said, “There is a smell of gas here in downtown.” That’s what caused the explosion? We don’t know if the smell of gas came from the blast or the fire.
A lot of people were saved by firefighters who got into the building. DFW Scanner says that a reunification place was set up for people who are looking for their family or friends. Someone from Atmos Energy, a company that delivers gas to northern Texas, stated that the company is looking into the blast.
Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement, “We continue to monitor the situation and stand ready to immediately deploy any additional personnel and resources needed to keep Texans in the area safe and out of harm’s way.”
