The Chinese AI lab DeepSeek’s Android app has reached the number one position on the Google Play Store, just a few days after its robot app became the top app on the Apple App Store.

Since its launch in mid-January, the DeepSeek app has been downloaded more than 1.2 million times on the Play Store and over 1.9 million times on the App Store globally, according to AppFigures, a company that tracks app data. The number of installs might actually be higher because DeepSeek shows that it has over 5 million downloads on the Play Store.

DeepSeek’s quick climb in fame is due to the release of new open-source AI models that compete with top companies in the West, such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google.

The Chinese company says its AI models were learned at a much lower cost than those from OpenAI and Meta, and with less powerful AI chips.

DeepSeek’s app is a ChatGPT replacement that uses the V3 model developed by a Chinese lab. You can use the bot to check files, ask questions, and find information online. The app is free and allows you to share files and keep your chat history up to date on all your devices.

DeepSeek is currently at the top, but it needs to reach 300 million weekly users to stay ahead of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the long run.

DeepSeek and its related models have gotten a lot of attention from the industry recently. Startups like Perplexity and Gloo, which is led by former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, are already using DeepSeek in their projects.
