Spotify Makes It Harder For Developers To Use Some Of Its Suggestion Tools

Spotify said in a blog post for developers on Wednesday that it would no longer let developers who are making third-party apps with its Web API access some features of the music streaming service, like song and artist suggestions. It looks like the company is making it hard for outside developers to use info from Spotify users to make AI apps.

Spotify told Parhlo World in an email, “We’re making changes to our public APIs as part of our ongoing work to address the security challenges that many companies face today.”

It thinks that some developers have been abusing its API in bad ways, such as by scraping data from its platform. The changes are meant to stop them. Spotify is taking away access to features that could show information about how Spotify users listen, such as the bands and songs that different groups of users like to listen to. These could be used to make AI song recommendation models that are competitive, which is something that Spotify has been working on for the past few years.

In addition to Spotify’s suggestions for songs and artists, devs are losing access to Audio Analysis, which shows how a track is structured and how it flows. Developers also lost access to Audio Features, which describe different aspects of a song, such as how “danceable” it is, how energetic it is, and whether it’s acoustic. Spotify also stopped letting developers use its songs that are made by computers.

A lot of people on Spotify’s community forum were angry that the music company took away their access to these features. Some developers used these features to make AI music recommendation services, while others used them to make apps that have nothing to do with AI suggestions but will no longer be able to use these features.

One developer in the group said, “With the rise of transformer models, there’s likely a risk of people training new models to copy Spotify’s model(s).” „I really hope that’s not why they’re taking it down, but if it is, I’m just upset.“

“Let’s be honest, this isn’t about user privacy or security. It’s about data being used to train AI models,” said another developer.

In the past few years, Spotify has been building AI music models. The company’s CEO, Daniel Ek, has said that AI will be “huge for creativity” in music. In the past few years, Spotify has put out a number of AI goods based on these models. Last year, they released an AI DJ. In the past few months, the company has also made its AI tracks available to more people in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.

These changes will only have an effect on developers who don’t have as much access to the Spotify API as official partners. Developers who have already filed for an extension will still be able to use these API endpoints. However, Spotify doesn’t seem to have let developers know about these changes.
