Tuesday, President-elect Trump said that Elon Musk will co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency. DOGE is Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency, and the name for the department stands for it. Vivek Ramaswamy, biotech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, will lead the department with the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, Neuralink, and owner of X. Their goal is to make it easier for Trump’s administration to “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.”
DOGE will “provide advice and guidance from outside of Government,” which means it won’t be a real government body that needs funding and approval from lawmakers. The news release says that DOGE will instead work with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget.
The Trump team said that DOGE’s work would end on July 4, 2026, at the latest.
Musk has been talking about making a Department of Government Efficiency for a few months now as he campaigns for Trump across the country. That being said, it wasn’t clear what DOGE would look like or if Trump would really accept Musk’s offer.
Musk said at a rally in New York in October that if Trump wins, he would find “at least $2 trillion in cuts” in government agencies. We still don’t know if Musk and Ramaswamy will keep their word. Musk never made it clear which departments or policies would be cut.

In the past few months, Trump and Musk have become very close. Their friendship has grown even stronger since they held an X Spaces chat together in August. In 2024, when Trump was running for president, Musk gave more than $100 million to the America PAC, a super PAC that supported Trump. Musk also held events for Trump in key swing states. During a speech in September at the Economic Club of New York, Trump promised Musk the job as head of DOGE.
