Pebble is a rival to X. Gabor Cselle used to be the CEO and co-founder of Pebble. He has now joined OpenAI to work on a secret project.
According to LinkedIn, Cselle has worked at OpenAI since October, but he only told everyone about it in a post on X yesterday. He wrote, “Will share more about what I’m working on when the time is right.” “I am already learning a lot.”
This is Cselle’s second time starting a business. He gave his first one to Google, which was a mobile email startup backed by Y Combinator. Namo Media, his second business, was a native advertising startup that he sold to Twitter before Elon Musk bought Twitter and changed its name to X.
Cselle worked at Twitter as a group product manager for almost ten years, where he was in charge of the home feed, new user onboarding, and logged-out experiences. His job at Google’s Area 120 lab for spin-offs, where he was in charge, was what made him leave Twitter in 2016.
Cselle and Michael Greer, who used to be the head of tech at Discord, started working on Pebble, which was first called T2, in 2022. Pebble focused on safety and moderation, had a small but active group, and got money from angel investors, such as Rich Miner, co-founder of Android.
But Pebble had a hard time keeping up real growth. In October of last year, the business shut down. In November, it came back as a Mastodon instance.
In May, Cselle joined the South Park Commons accelerator and worked on a number of generative AI concepts, one of which was a love letter to the popular game show HQ Trivia.
The news of Csell’s hiring comes at the same time that OpenAI competitor Anthropic hires Alex Rodrigues, the founder of Embark.

Rodrigues led the self-driving truck company Embark through a SPAC merger in 2021 and a fire sale to Applied Intuition in 2023. On Friday, he announced that he would be joining Anthropic as a safety analyst for AI.
