On September 16, all Apple users could get the iOS 18 update. Before Apple Intelligence came out, the most important new features were the new Passwords app, the ability to change app settings on the Lock Screen, the ability to change icons on the Home Screen, and the ability to support RCS.
But there are also a lot of other fun and small changes that could be useful.
Here is a list of some of our favourite traits that you may not have noticed.
Changes
- Apple no longer puts all of your apps on the main page of the Settings app, which can be annoying if you have a lot of them. Instead, there is a different menu called “Apps” that only has your apps. The Settings screen is now less crowded, and it’s easier to see where the settings for each app are.
Picture
- You can now look through your picture library in the Photos app without taking screenshots. Click on the gear icon in the bottom left area and uncheck “Screenshots” under “View Options.” This will hide your screenshots.
- There are new types of content in the pictures app’s Utilities collection, such as documents, receipts, handwriting, illustrations, and QR codes. These make it easier to find certain things in your pictures. You can also see media that was recently added, changed, or shared.
- The Photos app will instantly suggest pictures that would look good as wallpapers.
- You can now copy changes you made to one picture to another. This includes crop, exposure, and white balance changes for aspect ratio.
- There is also an area in the Photos app called “Trips” that automatically organises your travels. It also groups people and pets together, so you can easily find pictures of your partner and your cat together.
- You can now make slowed-down video effects with the new video speed control tool.
Camera
- Users often said they didn’t like how the music on their headphones would stop when they wanted to take a picture or video. With iOS 18, that problem is fixed; music will still play through Bluetooth links while you take a picture or video.
- Along with the 3-second and 10-second clocks that were already there, the Camera app now has a 5-second timer as well.
Centre for Control
- On iOS 18, you can add apps and buttons to your Control Centre to make it your own.
- One of the most important changes is that there is now a power button in the upper right corner. To turn off the device, you no longer need to hold down the power button and volume down. Instead, you can use the Control Centre.
What’s Up
- Finally, the texts app lets you schedule texts to be sent at a later time. However, this feature is hidden in the + menu instead of being linked to the send button, which could make it hard to find.
- You can now send photos up to 100 MB in size in iMessage. The photos can be in full quality.
- Text Effects let you add animated effects like “Expand” or “Ripple” to any letter, word, or phrase. This makes talks more visually interesting. You can also change the style of the text by making it bold, italic, strikethrough, or highlight.
- You can use satellite to send texts when you’re not connected to the internet.
- As of now, you can “Tapback” with any image or sticker, and the most recent three are spread out so they are easier to see.
A Safari
- Safari now has a way to get rid of things on a page that are annoying. You can’t get rid of ads with this feature, but it can clean up parts of the website you don’t need or want to see. One example is that you can hide the box that asks you to sign up for an email program if a website makes you do it. (The Browser Company’s Arc browser added a tool like this last year.)
- Outline highlights let you read an outline of a piece of writing before you read it all the way through.
- It will also lead you to useful details about people, songs, films, or TV shows.
The weather
- The Weather app now has a widget that shows the Fees Like temperature along with the real temperature in the full view. That way it’s easy to compare the two.
- The Weather app will also make wind speeds, gusts, and routes stand out more.
- People you know can now set their Home and Work addresses in the Weather app.
Siri
- With the new AirPods, you can shake or nod your head in response to Siri messages. That means you can use your hands to answer or reject calls.
Podcasts
- If a podcast has set chapter markers, the new Podcasts app lets you jump to a certain one from the progress bar.
- The Podcasts app can now move shows around in the listening queue and remove them.
- The podcast description lets you share a certain part of a podcast.
Maps
- Maps now has more hikes, topographic maps, and route building options, making it more like popular third-party tools like AllTrails.
- Hikes in all U.S. national parks can be saved in the Maps app so that you can go on them when you’re not online. You can also make your own walking and hiking paths and save them.
- Apple is adding the ability to compare places by looking at pictures, ratings, and prices to the Maps app. This will help you find new places.
Notes
- Notes now lets you make structured documents inside the app by letting you collapse parts.
- Additionally, the app now lets you record audio, so you can do an audio session right from your note and save it along with your notes, tasks, and documents. You can change the note even as it’s being recorded.
- There is also PDF inline search and different colour highlights in the Notes app.
- Notes and Calculator can both be used to solve math problems.
- You can also add different graphs and factors that are connected to equations.
Send mail
- The Mail app can now finally group emails by source. You can quickly do things with them, like delete and archive emails, mark them as read, and do other things.
- You can find order confirmations, receipts, shipping, and travel details more easily now that there is a new category called “Transactions.”
- In the meantime, a posts category will put all of your Newsletters, news stories, and social posts in one place, like Gmail.
- Items that need to be seen soon will still be in the Primary area from Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. (They’ll also have an icon for their group next to them to make them easy to find.)
- You can get new tools to clean up your email in the Mail app, on iCloud.com, and in your iCloud Mail settings.
Tools and the keyboard
- There are now more than one language options on the computer. Also, it remembers the last language you used in apps like Messages and changes to that language immediately.
- Apple has also made it possible to look for both emojis and stickers and added a single picker for them in the keyboard.
- It is now possible for the Calculator to analyse expressions, set variables, and make graphs.
- When you’re helping a friend with tech issues, you can ask for permission to control their gadget from afar.
- For iOS 18, the torch app on some phones has a fun new look. The beam’s width can be changed, and the strength can be changed.
Report
- You can write down your feelings in the Journal app.
- This book will keep track of the time you spend writing in it.
- You can also print your entries and have voice transcriptions done with this app.
- You can get into the habit of writing in a journal by adding widgets to your home screen that tell you to write and give you prompts.
Reminders and a Calendar
- With iOS 18, Calendar will show you reminders with times, and you can add new things or change existing ones right in the app.
- There are also new views for days, weeks, and months in the Calendar, which makes it easy to quickly look over your plans.
- Also, the Reminders app now has grocery lists in more than one language and lists of recently removed items.
- Apple has now made it easy to add new things to family lists, like group calendars, grocery lists, and password lists.
Files
- With the Files app, you can make sure that certain iCloud files or folders are always saved and synced on your phone.
- With iOS 18, iPhones can now format external drives in more file types, such as APFS, exFAT, or MS-DOS (Fat32). The Files app also lets you get rid of these files.
The Apple TV app
- The Apple TV app now has a feature called InSight that works like X-Ray on Amazon Prime Video. It shows facts about the actors and music in a movie or show.
- For better hearing, there is a new feature called “enhance dialogue.” This will help you understand what is being said even when there are loud music and sounds.
Back to Home
- You can use your voice to open linked doors after updating the Home app for iOS 18.
- You can also add up to 29 guests and let them in whenever they want.
- When Ultra Wideband-compatible smart locks come out next year, you won’t even have to take your phone out of your pocket to open them.
Ability To Access
- There are new accessibility tools in iOS 18 that let you control your phone’s interface with your eyes.
- Users can also create their own phrases that will do things like open the camera, go to the Home screen, start a shortcut, or make a Siri request.
- In iOS 18, there are also dots on the edges of the screen that show when a car is moving. This can help people who get motion sickness. These dots will let you know how fast the car is moving. You can make it work automatically, be on, or off.
- This app will sync the iPhone’s Taptic Engine with the beat of songs so that hard of hearing and deaf people can enjoy Apple Music.
