The White House says that the Tesla CEO’s post on X was “irresponsible.”
Tech billionaire Elon Musk took down a social media post that said there had been no efforts to kill US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris after getting a lot of negative feedback.
There was a second effort to kill former President Donald Trump on Sunday. In response, Musk wrote on X that “no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala” and included an emoji of a face with an eyebrow raised.
In recent months, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has become an outspoken supporter of Trump. He wrote the post in answer to another X user who asked why people were trying to kill the Republican candidate.
Musk wrote afterward that the post was a joke.
Musk wrote, “Well, one thing I’ve learnt is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it will be that funny as a post on X.”
It turns out that jokes are WAY less funny when they are delivered in plain text and people don’t know what the joke is about.
Musk, who was born in South Africa, got negative responses from people of all political views. On Monday, the phrase “DeportElonMusk” became popular on X.
Andy Bates, who is the White House’s deputy press secretary, called Musk’s statements “irresponsible.”
“There is no place for political violence or any violence ever in our country,” Bates said in a statement. “As President Biden and Vice President Harris said after yesterday’s disturbing news, ‘we all must do our part to make sure that this incident does not lead to more violence.'”
“Violence should only be condemned; it should never be praised or made fun of.”
Musk, who is often named as the richest person in the world, officially backed Trump for president in 2024 in July, after the Republican candidate barely survived a gunman’s attempt to kill him in Butler, Pennsylvania.
