The next big Google tech event is on August 13 at 10 a.m. PT. That gives the Made By Google show, which usually happens in the middle of fall, about two months early. In a big deal, the company will also unveil its newest top phone, the Pixel 9, before the iPhone 16. Apple will show off its newest product in September.
Google hasn’t explained why they changed things. Not even a month away from what has already become the strangest presidential election in modern U.S. history, there may be too much noise. The company also has a lot to talk about when it comes to Gemini. It’s likely that the new phones will have important new creative AI features before any other Android phones on the market.
One practice that Google has kept this year is showing off the devices before the event. The move always takes some of the air out of the room before a big event, but it works well to get people excited during the slow summer months for consumer gadgets. This week, Google showed off two new phones: the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Fold. These are the line’s most expensive phones.
Phones Made For “The Gemini Era”
On both, it says, “A (foldable) phone built for the Gemini era.” This is the latest in a long line of tech events with an AI theme. Google I/O in May was all about developers, but Gemini was the main topic of conversation. The event also had a lot of news about putting the groundwork for the company’s AI goals.
In fact, Google tried to keep its consumer hardware products away from the developer meeting by announcing the Pixel 8a a few days before it happened. Notably, this year’s most interesting AI tool for Android users didn’t come out on a Pixel device at all. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 was the first phone to get Circle to Search in January.
When Apple released Apple Intelligence at WWDC in June, it made a big deal about AI. That’s why Cupertino is willing to work with both Google and OpenAI: it doesn’t have as much creative AI power as those two companies.
Apple takes a small-scale approach to this area, doing as much as possible on the device itself. With Gemini Nano, Google has also taken a step in that direction. Late last month, the much smaller form was added to Pixel 8 devices through a feature drop.
In the past few years, Google has made it clear that it wants the Pixel line to become more popular than its current second-place spot in the Android market. For several versions of devices now, the company has been making its own mobile chips. With all the R&D that has been put into Gemini, could this be the time when Pixel finally breaks away?
Pixel 9 Pro And Pixel 9 Pro Fold
The Pixel 9 Pro was shown in one of two teaser movies that the company put out earlier this week. It’s not a surprise that Gemini got a lot more screen time than the gear. The GenAI is asked to write a “breakup letter” for an old phone in favor of “something magical” for twenty seconds of the thirty-second movie.
You got itโthat’s the Pixel 9 Pro. It can turn 180 degrees to show the camera bar that ends all camera bars. It looks like Google built the camera bar into the Pixel, but this big helmet would make Cyclops blush. The curved bar on the back of the device is no longer there, but the camera bump sticks out more sharply.
The movie for Google’s newest foldable is almost the same, but the screen opens to show “Oh hi, AI” before closing to show the back of the device. The camera bumps look familiar, but the foldable one is off-center and has lenses stacked on top of each other.
Google chose the name “Pixel 9 Pro Fold” instead of, say, “Pixel Fold 2.” This suggests that it will be more integrated with the regular Pixel line. In the end, the company may decide to make the Pro Fold the real high-end device in the line. Even though the Pixel 8 cost $100 more than the Pixel 7 and 8 before it came out last year, the line has still been cheaper than Samsung and Apple.
The company finally didn’t care about what other people thought when they made the first Pixel Fold, which cost a hefty $1,799 and came out last summer. The starting price has gone down a lot since then, though. They cost $1,300 and you can get one from Google. Still, you should wait a few weeks to see what Made by Google has in store.
The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Premium are the four Pixel phones that Google is likely to announce. All of the phones should have the Tensor G4, the company’s newest chip, and run Android 15.
Google 15
The most recent beta of Android 14 came out last week. It’s called beta 4. Some features were shown off at I/O, but the full release won’t happen until the August 13 event. The newest version of the mobile operating system has been code-named “Vanilla Ice Cream.” Internally, these cute treat names are still used. It will add new features and make some changes to the user interface.
Already mentioned highlights include better multitasking and satellite connectivity. Private Space, on the other hand, is a kind of incognito mode on the device that makes it harder to access personal information without being verified. A better Doze mode, on the other hand, should make the battery last longer.
What About Helper?
An important question that has been raised over the last few Gemini updates is what will happen to Google Assistant. It’s clear that Google wants its own GenAI to take over Android’s most important jobs in the long run, but it’s still unclear whether that means getting rid of Assistant completely or making it stronger, like Apple has done with Siri.
Users can use Gemini as their main helper right now if they want to, but Google did the right thing in the end by not replacing helper completely.
In past years, Assistant was more important at Made by Google events because Google Home and Nest were announced at those times. Fans of smart home gadgets have grown less excited, so the company has slowed down. When Gemini comes back, maybe it will give the place a much-needed boost.
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Watch 3
While the smart home market may have slowed down, Google has been very optimistic about wearable tech ever since it bought Fitbit in 2020. It looks like the Pixel Watch 3 will be shown off at the event on August 13. The same goes for Pixel Buds Pro 2.
