Meta is now letting all users in India use its Llama-3-powered AI robot. It was tested for a few months during the general elections. However, Meta AI only works with English right now and not any other languages.
To try Meta AI in India, the company began rolling it out to a small group of users on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook in April. After a few days, the company took the bot live in more than a dozen countries. It wasn’t in India, though, probably because that country was having its general elections at the time.
Meta is letting all of its users access the robot through the search bar in its apps as well as the meta.ai website.
Chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude are a lot like Meta AI in how they work. It can help you write emails, plan workouts, come up with recipes, or recap a lot of text.
The Instagram chatbot can tell you about Reels to watch based on what you look for. You will also see a Meta AI prompt in your Facebook feed, which lets you ask questions about the post. Meta AI could tell you about the best places and times to see the northern lights, for instance, if you see a picture of the aurora borealis.
Meta AI can also make pictures based on what you tell it to do. A report from May by TechCrunch said that Meta AI often adds turbans to pictures of Indian guys. There were also other biases, like always making an old-fashioned Indian house with bright colors, wooden columns, and roofs with different styles.
Meta said at the time that it was always changing its models, but it’s not clear if the company had made any changes in these areas.
“Because this is a new technology, it might not always give us the answer we want. This is true for all generative AI systems.” As of that moment, the company told TechCrunch, “Since we launched, we’ve continuously released updates and improvements to our models, and we’re still working on making them better.”
Meta is adding its robot to India’s 500 million WhatsApp users and the hundreds of millions of people who use its other apps. Meta AI can be contacted one-on-one through WhatsApp, but it can also be used to help with planning a trip or picking out a movie to watch in a group chat.
According to the company, Meta AI only sees the text you use to talk to or reply to the chatbot and not the rest of the interaction. The company made changes to its model based on what you told it.
Meta said that you can’t disable or hide the Meta AI features in its app. The person can still do a search, though, without using the robot.

The social media company’s launch comes a week after Google’s Gemini app for Android users in India was made available, which supports nine Indian languages.
