A remote access app is being used on the computers at check-in at a number of hotels in the US. This app is leaking photos of guest information to the internet.

Learned that at least three Wyndham hotels across the United States have spying apps for everyday use running on their check-in systems.

The app, pcTattletale, constantly and quietly took screenshots of the hotel booking systems, which showed information about customers and guests. Because the spyware has a security hole, these screenshots can be seen by anyone on the internet, not just the people who are supposed to use the malware.

This is the most recent case of consumer-grade spyware letting private data slip because it has a glitch in its security. Also, this is the second time that we know of that pcTattletale has shared screenshots of devices that have the app loaded. In the past few years, a number of other spyware apps had security holes or were set up incorrectly, letting private information of device users who weren’t aware of it become public. In some cases, this led to action by government regulators.

The person who runs pcTattletale can see the target’s Android or Windows device and its data from anywhere in the world. The website for pcTattletale says that the app “runs invisibly in the background on their workstations and can not be detected.”

But the bug means that anyone on the internet who knows how the security hole works can download the spyware’s pictures straight from pcTattletale’s servers.

Erik Daigle, a security expert, told TechCrunch that he found the hacked hotel check-in systems while looking into spyware for consumers. People often call these apps “stalkerware” because they can be used to spy on people, even husbands and domestic partners, without their knowledge or permission.

Daigle said he tried to let pcTattletale know about the problem, but the company didn’t answer. At the time of release, the bug still hadn’t been fixed. In a short blog post, Daigle talked about pcTattletale’s bug that lets screenshots get out. He didn’t go into too much detail so that bad people wouldn’t be able to use the problem.

It’s been said by Daigle that pcTattletale sometimes takes new pictures of the device that the app is running on every few seconds.

Scans from two Wyndham hotels that TechCrunch saw show the names and ticket information of guests on a website run by the travel tech giant Sabre. The photos of the websites also show the partial payment card numbers of the guests.

Another picture showed that someone was able to access the check-in system for a third Wyndham hotel while logged into Booking.com’s management portal for managing a guest’s reservation.

No one knows who put the app there or how it was put there. For example, it’s unclear whether hotel workers were tricked into putting it or whether the hotel owner planned to use the spyware to keep an eye on how workers behaved. pcTattletale advertises itself as a way to keep an eye on workers, among other things.

One hotel manager told over the phone that they had no idea the spyware was taking pictures of their check-in computer. The other two hotel managers didn’t answer TechCrunch’s calls or texts. TechCrunch isn’t saying which hotels it is because workers could be hurt if they do.

Rob Myers, a spokesman for Wyndham, told TechCrunch in an email, “Wyndham is a franchise organization, which means that each of our hotels in the U.S. is privately owned and run.” It was unclear to Wyndham whether it knew that pcTattletale was being used on the computers at the front desks of its own hotels or whether this was in line with Wyndham’s own rules.

According to Booking.com, the spyware did not affect their own systems. However, they said that this case showed how hackers try to get into hotel systems to get to the hotels’ accounts.

An official from Booking.com, Angela Cavis, said, “Unfortunately, some of our accommodation partners have been targeted by very convincing and sophisticated phishing tactics. These have been telling them to click on links or download attachments outside of our system that allow malware to load on their computers and in some cases lead to unauthorized access to their Booking.com account.” “These bad people then try to pretend to be the partner or even Booking.com, and sometimes they are very good at it, to get customers to pay money that isn’t allowed by the policy in their booking confirmation.”

In December of last year, BBC News revealed that hackers had gotten into the management portals of individual hotels that use Booking.com. The thieves then used the company’s app to send texts to customers trying to get them to pay them instead of the hotel.

Nobody knows if pcTattletale or some other kind of spyware is connected to past problems, and Booking.com said it was looking into it.

    “All Tracks Were Played”

There is a long history of stalkerware apps that say they can be used for legal reasons (like keeping an eye on your own kids, which is legal in the US), but they also say or promote that they can be used to spy on people without their knowledge, usually spouses and domestic partners, which is against the law.

pcTattletale is sold as software for keeping an eye on employees and children, but the company also calls it an app for “spouses who worry that their partner might be cheating.”

pcTattletale makes spyware apps for both Android and Windows. To run either app, you need to be physically close to the device you want to spy on. According to TechCrunch’s tests and research of the spyware, pcTattletale’s Windows spyware app can be downloaded with just one click and set up in just a few seconds.

pcTattletale also has a service called “We Do It For You,” which the company says will help the customer put spyware on the target’s computer.

“We set up pcTattletale on their Windows PC for you.” “Just pick a time,” pcTattletale’s website tells people who sign up for its users’ area. “We will send you an email with instructions on how to get into their computer.” It takes the same amount of time. There are no signs left behind. All the tracks are played. After that, a link is sent to the customer “for our tech. to access the computer.”
