Once again, TikTok users can make music videos with songs from UMG’s library. This includes songs by Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande, among others. That’s because, after months of fighting, the social media site and Universal Music Group (UMG) have finally come to an agreement on how to license material. There was no information about how much the deal cost.
The move comes at a very bad time for the business. TikTok is once again in danger of being banned in important countries, such as the United States. So getting this deal with UMG is important not only to improve its programming but also to raise its profile with users that TikTok wants to support it. The company has chosen to go to court to fight the fear of a ban in the U.S., but it would still like some good news.
In one or two weeks, the product will be ready for making videos. That also means that movies with UMG music that were muted before will no longer be muted when the catalog is ready.
TikTok said in a post, “Fans on TikTok can look forward to the return of UMG’s recorded music and publishing catalogs and once again enjoy making videos with music from some of the world’s biggest artists and songwriters as well as exciting new talent.”
Some of Taylor Swift’s music was put back on TikTok last month, mostly because she owns the masters to some of her records. This deal comes after that.
CEO of TikTok Shou Chew said that the company was happy to have “found a path forward” with UMG after their fight.
There is a lot of music on TikTok, and we’re glad we were able to work things out with Universal Music Group. He said, “We are committed to working together to help all of UMG’s amazing artists and songwriters get more value, exposure, and promotion, as well as to help them grow, connect, and interact with the TikTok community even more.”

UMG took its catalog off of the short video app TikTok earlier this year because it didn’t want to renew its contract with the company. UMG also made a new deal with Spotify to share song videos.
