A consulting company in the United States called Greylock McKinnon Associates (GMA) said that hackers stole up to 341,650 Social Security numbers.
The breach was made public on Friday on Maine’s government website, which is where the state posts notices of breaches.
GMA told people who were affected by a data breach in the mail that it was hit by an unknown cyberattack in May 2023 and “promptly took steps to mitigate the incident.”
Companies and U.S. government bodies, like the U.S. Department of Justice, that are involved in civil litigation can get economic and legal help from GMA. GMA told people whose personal information was stolen that it “was obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”) as part of a civil litigation matter” that GMA was supporting.
No one knows why and who the DOJ is suing in civil court. There was a request for feedback from the Justice Department, but no one answered.
GMA said that the people who were told about the data breach are “not the subject of this investigation or the related litigation matters,” and they also said that the cyberattack “does not affect your current Medicare benefits or coverage.”
“We talked to outside cybersecurity experts to help us figure out how to handle the situation, and we told the police and the DOJ.” The company wrote, “On February 7, 2024, we got confirmation of which individuals’ information was affected and their contact addresses.”
People who were affected by the scam were told by GMA that “your personal and Medicare information was likely affected in this incident.” This includes names, dates of birth, home addresses, some medical and health insurance information, and Medicare claim numbers that included Social Security numbers.
It’s not clear why it took GMA nine months to figure out how bad the breach was and let victims know about it.

GMA and the company’s outside lawyer, Linn Freedman of Robinson & Cole LLP, did not reply right away to a request for comment.
