Apple changed the rules for the App Store on Friday so that emulators for old computer games can be used everywhere and titles can be downloaded. So, the company told the coders that it is their job to make sure they follow copyright rules.
There are already a lot of apps for Android that let people play old games on their phones. Some of those makers will probably be more likely to put their emulators on the App Store after Apple’s update.
The company said that these emulator apps must have a way to buy digital things inside the app. Because Apple has to change the rules for the App Store to follow the law, these types of games would give the company another way to make money.
When Apple posted the first set of rules in January that were in line with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), the company also said that it would let streaming game stores open all over the world. At that time, it also changed the rules for the App Store to allow in-app payments for AI chatbots and minigames.
Apple also changed the rule on Friday about giving plug-ins to include HTLM5-based mini-apps, which could include services provided by big apps like WeChat.
“Apps may offer software that isn’t built into the binary. This includes HTML5 mini apps and games, live games, chatbots, and plug-ins. The clause also said that retro game system emulator apps could offer to download games.
There were five reasons why the U.S. Department of Justice sued Apple last month for unfair behaviour. One of them was that super apps were being blocked.
Along with information about subscriptions and other digital purchases, music streaming services like Spotify will be able to show links to their website so users can finish the purchase. This is another big change to the rules.
When Spotify tried to add price information for users in the EU last month, they put an update in the App Store. However, Apple took weeks to approve it. With Apple’s most recent rule change, it’s possible that the EU will be able to get the updated Spotify app.
Spotify has been asked to speak, and we will change the story if we hear back.
