Bloomberg reported that Apple has added another AI company to its list of purchases. DarwinAI, based in Canada, uses vision-based technology to keep an eye on parts while they are being made to make the process more efficient.

Officially, neither Apple nor DarwinAI have said anything about the deal. However, several members of the startup’s team joined Apple’s machine learning teams in January, according to their LinkedIn accounts.

Over $15 million had been raised for DarwinAI by backers such as BDC Capital’s Deep Tech Venture Fund, Honeywell Ventures, Obvious Ventures, and Inovia Capital. On its website, BDC Capital says that it has received an exit from DarwinAI. On the other hand, Obvious Venture has changed its portfolio to show that the startup has been bought.

At the time this story was written, neither BDC Capital nor Obvious Venture had anything to say about it. Apple didn’t answer right away when asked for feedback.

According to a story by Bloomberg, DarwinAI not only helps make manufacturing more efficient, but it also uses techniques to make AI models smaller and faster. This may be helpful for the generative AI features that Apple plans to include in iOS 18 later this year.

Comparing Apple to competitors like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, the latter four have released gen-AI powered capabilities faster than Apple. Tim Cook told us in February that the company plans to add these kinds of tools “later this year.”

“We continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort, and we’re excited to share the details of our ongoing work in that space later this year,” Cook told analysts on a quarterly earnings call.

The CEO of Apple confirmed last year that the company would be investing in gen-AI projects. According to Apple’s job postings, the company is looking into putting AI to use in a number of internal and external areas, such as Siri, development tools, and customer service.
