Ukraine’s armed forces say that the Caesar Kunikov, a big Russian assault ship, has sunk off the coast of Russian-occupied Crimea.
Local social media said they heard loud blasts early Wednesday morning, which made them think the landing ship had been hit not far south of the town of Yalta.
In occupied Crimea, Ukraine has hit Russia’s Black Sea force many times.
From space last year, it looked like most of the ships had left the peninsula.
It was said that the landing ship was hit by Magura V5 navy drones in a video released by Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence.
Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine will have been going on for three years next week. The head of Ukraine’s armed forces has said that the situation is “extremely complex.”
Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was named commander-in-chief last week, went to the front line on Wednesday, just hours after three people were killed in the town of Selydove in the east by a Russian missile attack.
That the Caesar Kunikov had sunk in the Black Sea was not confirmed by Russia’s forces. They only said that six Ukrainian drones had been destroyed. BBC Verify confirmed that the video that seems to show what happened after the attack by the Ukrainians was only recently posted.
Ukraine’s intelligence agency said on the messaging app Telegram that the Caesar Kunikov had major holes in its port side and started to sink. They also said that it had been sunk in Ukrainian territorial waters by a unit called Group 13.

Russian military blogs didn’t say that the Caesar Kunikov hadn’t been hit; they just said that the crew was still alive. The Russian military doesn’t usually talk about big losses, and most Russians get their news from a few well-known blogs.
It is thought that the Caesar Kunikov was made near the end of the Soviet era. It would be the second successful strike in the Black Sea this month if it turns out that it sank. In an extra action almost two weeks ago, drones hit the Ivanovets, a small warship.
