It’s official: Selena Gomez will play Linda Ronstadt, the 11-time Grammy Award-winning singer, in a new movie.

Ronstadt posted about the news on her social media accounts on Wednesday. “It all began with a simple dream 👀💏” she wrote in a post that shared Variety’s article about the casting. She also put up the link to Rolling Stone’s story along with three heart-shaped emojis.

In a sneak peek at her upcoming part as the famous Mexican American singer, Gomez shared a picture of Ronstadt’s 2013 autobiography, “Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir,” on Instagram on Tuesday.

USA TODAY has asked a rep for both Ronstadt and Gomez for a response.

Rolling Stone was the first to report that the movie, which is said to be in pre-production, has hired new actors. Ronaldstadt’s manager, John Boylan, and James Keach are making the movie. Keach directed the 2022 documentary short “Linda and the Mockingbirds” and made “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” a 2019 documentary about the singer’s life.

The movie won the Grammy Award for best music video in 2021.

She hasn’t acted since 2009 because of a rare neurological disorder.

Ronstadt, who is now 77 years old, became one of the biggest pop stars of her time with “Different Drum” in 1967. She had eight songs in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, from “You’re No Good” in 1974 to “Hurt So Bad” in 1980.

In 1987, her album “Canciones de Mi Padre” went double platinum and won a Grammy for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album. It was the best-selling non-English language record in U.S. history.

Ronstadt’s last show took place in 2009. Two years later, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said she was retiring. In 2012, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which explained why she could no longer sing.

For example, Ronstadt found out in 2019 that she had progressive supranuclear palsy, which is “a rare neurological disorder that affects body movements, walking and balance, and eye movements,” according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

“My voice was getting worse over time. In her 2019 film, she says, “I just lost a lot of different colors in my voice.” “Singing is really hard. And having it go away made me most aware of it. I can think about singing, but I can’t do it in real life.

At the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, Gomez was nominated for best humor actress, but Ayo Edebiri won the award instead. On Sunday in Los Angeles, the Emmy Awards will be held. One of her Hulu shows, “Only Murders in the Building,” is up for best comedy series.
