Even though Yellowstone is coming to an end, Taylor Sheridan’s Dutton world keeps growing. One show started out following the dramas of the modern-day Dutton family on their Montana ranch. Now there are many spin-offs, including a 1923 season 2, a prequel show starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford that follows a younger generation of Duttons as they settle in the American west.
Before the end of the first season, Paramount+ announced that the show would be back for another episode. The show “explores the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, and the end of Prohibition all plague the mountain west and the Duttons who call it home.”
Here’s what we know about show 1923 Season 2:
Texas Becomes the New Home for 1923 Season 2 Production:
When season 2 was first released, it was thought that the show would go back to Butte, Montana, where the first season was shot. The production was supposed to start filming in June 2023, and the Butte Civic Centre was hired to be its soundstage. However, they stopped their deal with the show that summer because the actors’ and writers’ guilds’ strikes were making production delays that couldn’t be fixed. Previous news reports said that the show was paying the township $75,000 a month to use the Civic Centre until the end of the 2023 calendar year. They asked for an extension on their contract when production was first pushed back in May 2023.
It was later reported by NBC Montana that the show would return to Butte for at least some of its shooting. However, in May 2024, the Austin Business Journal reported that production would be based at ATX Film Studios in Texas. J.P. Gallagher, who is the CEO of Montana’s Butte-Silver Bow County, says that the move was partly caused by tax breaks.
A later story said that production would start in July 2024 and go through September. Reports say that the movie will be filmed all over Texas, but Austin will be the production’s main hub.
In July 2024, the Austin Film Commission in Texas posted on Instagram that shooting had started for the 1923 season 2. This is where the production has moved to.
“As you may have heard, films are being shot in Austin for the second season of Paramount and Taylor Sheridan’s 1923, which is the prequel to Yellowstone. Movies and TV shows like #1923 season 2 have a big effect on the Austin economy and give local actors and crew jobs. They wrote, “Looking forward to seeing Austin star in the hit show with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.”
1923 Season 2 Marks the Series Finale:
When asked if there would be more seasons, Brandon Sklenar, who plays war-torn big game shooter Spencer Dutton on the show, told the Hollywood Reporter that the show will definitely end after season 2.
“Not at all, it’s a bookend.” The series is still small, but I still think of it as a whole. There’s just a break in the middle, but it’s still a whole. “It will end,” he said.
When Is the Release Date for 1923 Season 2?
Fans are still very excited about 1923 season 2, even though it’s been over 18 months since it was officially given the go-ahead.
Season 1 ran from December 2022 to late February 2023. When Paramount renewed the show for a second season, they told fans that the show would be back at some time (via Variety).
Fans last heard about the project, it was said to have set a production plan and was getting ready to start shooting.
TVLine wrote in May 2024 that they had heard filming for the show would begin later that year, but they didn’t give an exact date.
There was news in the Austin Business Journal that the show would be back in front of cameras soon, and shooting would take place in Austin, Texas.
Records from the City of Austin (found through Screen Rant) show that the popular streaming western will be filmed in the area from July to September.
This comes after SkyShowtime CEO Monty Sarhan said in June, “They were filming a new season right now,” which could have meant that filming had already started before he went to Austin (via Deadline):
“They are filming a new season right now, Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are hard at work.”
Fans seem to know roughly when shooting for 1923 season 2 began, so it’s possible to start guessing when it might come out.
The first episodes of 1923 Season 1 began filming in August 2022 and debuted on Paramount+ in December of that same year, four months after the start of production.
The 1923 season 2 could come out before the end of 2024 if the production process is similar to the first. It’s likely to happen between October and December.
To start the New Year off on a good note, it seems more likely that the streamer will push the show into early or spring 2025.

At the top of the call sheet are Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. They have both announced that they will be back as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the couple at the center of the show. If they don’t get replaced, the following actors will also be back for 1923 season 2:

Meet the New Cast Members of 1923 Season 2:
The news outlet Deadline says that Jennifer Carpenter will be a regular on 1923 for the whole second season. Carpenter has been cast as Mamie Fossett, who is said to be “a highly capable U.S. Deputy Marshall who serves warrants and makes arrests with confidence ahead of her time.”
Carpenter played Emily Rose in The Exorcism of Emily Rose, a scary movie. But her most famous part is as Debra Morgan, the adopted sister of the main character of Showtime’s Dexter. Carpenter played the same part in the movie that came after Dexter: New Blood. She has also been in Limitless, The Enemy Within, and the new drama Ballistic.
Last but not least, Deadline broke the news that Janet Montgomery has joined the cast of 1923 season 2. Hillary, her character, is said to be “a thoughtful woman who does not want to see wrong go unpunished.”
Montgomery has worked on shows like New Amsterdam, The Human Target, Salem, Downton Abbey, This is us, and Quantum Leap. She was also in The Ex-Wife on Paramount+ and will be in the lead part in Fate, which is coming out soon.
Augustus Prew is the next person to join the group. He was most recently on The Morning Show on Apple TV+. His character, Paul, will show up more than once this season. He’s called “a dapper, bookish, well-to-do young British man on a passenger ship,” so it’s not clear how he fits into the story.
Prew was in the fifth season of Prison Break and played the lead on the CBS show Pure Genius. He has also been in The Borgias, About a Boy, The Secret of Moonacre, and Charlie St. Cloud.
Did Someone from the 1923 Cast Recently Die?
Yes. CNN reports that Cole Brings Plenty was found dead on April 5 after going missing on March 31. He played Pete Plenty Clouds in season 1 of 1923. Pete is Hank Plenty Clouds’s (Michael Greyeyes) preteen son. There are no clear details about how Bring Plenty died because his body was found not far from his car. When Brings Plenty went missing, he was also thought to have been violent with a partner. Mo Brings Plenty, who plays Yellowstone, was his nephew.
At this point, we don’t know if Brings Plenty will play Pete again in season 2 of 1923 or if the part will be filled by someone else.
When Will Production on 1923 Season 2 Commence?
Brandon Sklenar says that work on the 1923 season 2 begin later this year. Fox News talked to Sklenar at the Golden Globes in January 2024. He said that he is still waiting to see the scripts for the second season and that he will be going “in a couple of months” to start shooting.
But Paramount+ hasn’t officially said when 1923 season 2 will start filming.
Are There Any Clues About the Plot in 1923 Season 2?
Not yet. But the Duttons were in trouble at the end of the first season. The Duttons owed taxes on their land, and Donald Whitfield paid them. They have to pay him back by the end of the year, or he will take everything they own. That will definitely be the main plot when the story goes on.
Is 1923 Season 3 on Paramount+ in the Works?
Not at all. Sheridan has said that he only wants to make eight more episodes of 1923. This would be the end of this part of the Dutton family’s story.
“This one is different from 1883, when I had the whole thing planned out in my head,” Sheridan told Deadline in 2022. “I had no idea what to do with this one.” I just got back from a trip, and I made the call to the network, which was probably the best call they’ve ever receive. “Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story.” This has to be done in two parts. A block of eight episodes and another block of eight episodes to finish. There’s too much going on for me to finish it in two parts. They enjoy it a lot because it makes them happy. “I get more room to run.”
Is a Second Season of 1923 on the Horizon?
Yes. 1944, the follow-up drama, was revealed in February 2023. The show would take place near the end of World War II, and it’s likely that the Dutton family served in that war. Other than that, there are no other information about the show.
