Amazon Prime subscribers were delighted to see the streaming service renew its popular sci-fi show, The Peripheral to another season. But, in the last year, there’s not been much news about The Peripheral season 2 of the show, leading fans to wonder if the show is still taking place.
It’s not too surprising it was it’s not surprising that Peripheral received positive critic reviews, considering the fact that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy the creators of another successful sci-fi drama, Westworld, were executive producers for the show. The show is loosely based off the novel that bears the similar title written by William Gibson and set in the near future in which Flynne Fletcher (Chloe Grace Moretz) earns money playing virtual game in virtual reality. But her life alters as one day she is introduced to an online game that takes her to a real-time reality.
Making Gibson’s novel an animated series was not a difficult task as the book is packed with very sophisticated and imaginative concepts. Yet, The Peripheral does a great job of making his complicated sci-fi theories easier to manage and be incorporated into a series of eight episodes. It’s exciting, visually stunning and offers viewers of Westworld an additional complex sci-fi tale to ponder. In addition, with season one coming to an end on a high note, it was the perfect time for this storyline to go on.
The Intriguing World-Building of ‘The Peripheral’:
A retelling of the book with the same title written by William Gibson, The Peripheral was set in a far future in which virtual reality programming has revolutionized and altered society in profound ways. The show follows the twins Flynne (Chloe Grace Moretz) and Burton Fisher (Jack Reynor) who reside at the edge of society while caring for their elderly family. Flynne is gifted with VR programming, however she realizes it is the case that her world is beginning to blur into reality. A unidentified VR headset made by Columbia which is owned by an obscure company known as the Milagros Coldiron allows her to gain access to a brand new virtual world which has an eerie resemblance to reality she is accustomed to every day. Furthermore, it provides her with the possibility of navigating the dark, terrifying future in which the lives of all those they care about are at risk.
The concept of just exploring the different visual worlds would have been fascinating satisfying to warrant the initial season of a drama show. Prime Video certainly did not spare a dime in regards to the intricate production design for the series and, on the visceral sense, The Peripheral did a better job than the other popular genre shows streaming on rival streaming platforms such as Netflix as well as Disney+. The level of complete immersion that the show offered in every episode that is compelling suitable to binge watch it however, given that the Peripheralis an action and adventure show, it also set the stage for a thrilling mystery that was not resolved at the end of the first season.
One of the problems that shows of science fiction frequently face is the challenge of combining characters with strong worldbuilding. In a world that requires the use of a lot of background information it can be difficult to convince viewers to connect emotionally. The Peripheralwas capable of avoiding common problems due to outstanding performances that were delivered, and with Moretz being a standout from the initial season. Flynne had the pleasure of experiencing “the Peripheral” itself for the first time, and becomes the character of the audience when she is a part of the world of digital. The same excitement of confusion, wonder, and excitement that viewers may have felt when entering the film’s tangled narrative are felt by Flynne.
Will There Be The Peripheral Season 2?
On February 9th, 2023 Amazon has officially announced that it had renewed the show The Peripheral season 2. Viewers were relieved to find out that it was safe after cancellations were reported on a variety of streaming platforms. The show was, however, not really completely safe. Season two of The Peripheral isn’t taking place because Amazon reversed its decision on the renewal and made the decision to end the show and relaunch it on August.
The announcement was quite shocking and the only reason that an insider claimed to point to was the double WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that occurred over the summer. It appears that there was a fear that the new season would not start until 2025 due to production delays caused by the strikes, therefore Amazon just decided to stop the season. This is a completely bizarre choice as enough viewers are likely to have preferred the season sooner instead of not ever. In the meantime, intervals between seasons of TV shows are beginning to become commonplace following the outbreak and the strikes. A two – or three-year gap in between episodes of The Peripheral probably would not have slowed viewers down in any way.
It’s a bit odd to end a show even though it was renewed before and claim that it’s due to the strike is almost as if the cancellation was retaliation for workers who were seeking an equitable amount of compensation. In addition, since the show is a complicated, huge-budget sci-fi production, it’s likely that another streaming service will take it on for the Peripheral season 2. The door appears to have been shut for the show. The Peripheral season 2.
Sci-Fi Visionaries Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy Bring ‘Peripheral’ to Life
It’s been a difficult couple of years for those who love Jonathan Nolanand Lisa Joy. Nolan along with Joy are two creative storytellers in the field of science fiction who created a huge following based on the success of their popular HBO series Westworld and Nolan’s work on brothers’ projects Memento as well as Interstellar. Although the initial season of Westworld appeared to have been the next Game of Thrones, interest in the show and its puzzle box mysteries waned with time. Nolan as well as Joy’s fortune did not improve when they began their next round of shows. Joy’s debut directorial effort Reminiscencewas critically acclaimed loss, Westworld was as well cancelled and removed from Max completely. The pair also served as the producers for Prime Video’s highly acclaimed film adaptation from the popular Fallout, The Peripheralrepresented the ability of the two to appeal to a smaller fan base.
Westworldhad developed into a series that was obsessed with playing games of the mind with its viewers and generating crazy theories and speculation. Then, The Peripheralwas an emotionally charged science fiction show which explored the risks of relying too heavily on technology as well as the gap in social structure. The virtual world requires Flynne to think about her future plans and her life in the poorest of communities is accessible to connect with. In addition, there’s a great amount of exchanges among Reynor, Moretz, and the other guest stars to help to balance the expositional bits.
In Westworld, the characters had bored millionaires psychotic killers, and artificial life models, The Peripheral was essentially an edgy tale that took place in the hazy world of two virtual worlds. It was the ideal backdrop to investigate the lengths one family might go to rise their status. What would Flynne would be willing share her mind to a more positive and more optimistic reality even if it was not real? What kind of changes did she need to make in order to protect their family members from the grim future that could be in store for them?
What’s in Store for The Peripheral Season 2?
Although there’s a large part in the first season of The Peripheral’s initial season focused on establishing the universe that it is, it’s the “mystery box” element that is a key element in many aspects of Nolan and Joy’s work isn’t a hanging thread. Fans who watched the series up to the final episode may be finally getting a sense of the ways in which it differentiates reality from others and how it’s intended to remain in a state of confusion. The premise established in the early episodes of The Peripheral would have allowed for a second season to be less focused on exposition, and instead move forward by focusing on the mystery established in the finale of the season, “The Creation of a Thousand Forests,” concerning the mysterious Lev Zubov (J.J. Feild).
The Peripheral’s first season wasn’t perfect. There were a few clunky scenes, undeveloped characters and unnatural tonal shifts however none of these were problems that would hinder a subsequent season from making changes. Based on the massive sources from the novel by Gibson that the show runners had their available, The Peripheral could have been one of the most bold, most original sci-fi shows that air on TV. It’s shocking decision to cancel shows that streaming companies aren’t keen on letting show runners find their feet in the course of time.
