After the shocking ending of the miniseries earlier this year, many Shogun fans thought that the popular Japanese period drama would never come back. The great Hiroyuki Sanada was in the FX show, which then revealed that it would be back for Shogun Season 2 and Season 3. After Shogun won the most awards for a single year at the 76th Emmy Awards, it looks like the choice to keep things going was a great one.
A Shogun sweep happened on Sunday night. The FX show won Outstanding Drama Series, making it the most awarded show in a single year. The award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series went to Sanada, and the award for Outstanding Lead Actress went to Anna Sawai. When Sanada accepted the award, he spoke in Japanese and thanked “the passion and dreams we have inherited, crossing oceans and borders.”
What Sanada Said about Shogun Season 2?
This year, Sanada told Esquire that while they were shooting, he “never thought about Shogun season 2.” “But as a producer, it’s not about me,” he said next. “I need to keep this platform for the Japanese crew and cast.” And for being able to tell Japanese stories well. I can’t say no. I thought, “Let’s give the next generation more chances.” Along with being an executive director, Sanada will also be back as Lord Toranaga in the Shogun season 2. We didn’t think there would be any more shows after the end of season 1, so I’m really excited.
The Hollywood Reporter says that co-writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo are also already working on the next seasons. Kondo said, “There’s a lot of chaos, but creative chaos.” “Everything we have is being thrown at the wall to see what sticks.” We don’t have a road plan, so we can only look at the past. This is uncharted ground, so it’s been both exciting and scary.
Reports say that the married couple is travelling around Japan and working with James Clavell’s estate to find out how the famous author of “The Shogun” drew on real events and people in his life for his book. Marks said, “There’s a lot of great conspiracy theories in history. A lot of different theories about ‘Oh, it was said that this happened, but this really happened.’ Our favorite parts are the darker ones.” “The third season really ends.” We know the beginning and the end, as well as the people who are travelling with us. Right now, we’re only focussing on part two to make sure we can get there. Part two, on the other hand, is a bit darker than the first.
That’s scary! Now that Marks has given us a sneak peek, let’s go over everything we know about Shogun’s future.
What is Shogun?
The FX show Shogun is based on the famous book by James Clavell of the same name and takes place in Japan in the 1600s. It’s about an English sailor named John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) who gets caught up in a power struggle between ambitious samurai leader Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and his political opponents. At the same time, he starts dating Toda Mariko, who is his translator. The story is about how different cultures meet, how to stay alive in a dangerous time, and loyalty.
Can Fans Expect For Shogun Season 2?
Yes, it is. As stated in FX’s press release, the company is working with Hulu and the Estate of James Clavell to add two more seasons to the highly praised global hit drama Shogun. This will continue the story. The show’s co-creators, executive producers, and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, as well as executive producer Michaela Clavell and series star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada, are all on board with the plan. There are no set dates for production yet, but a writers’ room is being put together and will start working this summer.
Shogun is based on the same-named 1975 book by James Clavell. The novel has a clear finish that the FX show used in some parts. After Shogun, the author wrote many more books in his “Asian Saga,” but none of them are about the same people from Shogun. In particular, FX’s press statement says, “The story and characters are meant to continue the saga,” which makes it sound like Shogun season 2 will pick up where season 1 left off. According to Marks, it’s hard because any stories that were told would have to be just as good as the book. He didn’t know if those stories existed though, as he told Esquire right before the end of season 1.
If the Shogun team wants to learn more about the Tokugawa shogunate, they can do so with a lot of Japanese history that happened after 1600. Tokugawa gets the title of shogun and then holds on to power for 15 years. He is now 65 years old and has a new job: to hand over the shogunate to his son Hidetada without a hitch. He is also friendly with William Adams, who was John Blackthorne’s rival. In the end, he has to hold Osaka Castle when the Taikō’s son finally turns 18 and leads a rebellion. That means Shogun has a lot more to say.
“We no longer have James Clavell’s novel, but we learnt his spirit and the way he told stories,” Sanada told THR. “The most important thing to me is to keep quality high.”
