The court said that the investigation showed that the former member of the K-pop band EXO raped three women between November 2020 and December 2020.
A Beijing court sentenced Canadian singer Kris Wu to 13 years in prison on Friday after finding him guilty of crimes like rape. His arrest in China, where he was born and built a successful career, happened just over a year ago.
The court in the district of Chaoyang said that the investigation showed that the 32-year-old man, who is also known as Wu Yifan, raped three women from November to December 2020.
The court said on its official WeChat account that Wu Yifan took advantage of three drunk women at his home.
The superstar used to be in the K-pop group EXO, but in 2014 he moved back to China to start a solo career.
Wu was arrested on July 31, 2017, after a Chinese student who was 18 years old said in public that he had gotten her and other girls, some of whom were younger than 18, to have sex with him.
At the time, the student told the media that Wu had drunkenly wooed her into having sex with him when she was 17.
In July 2018, the court also found him guilty of putting together a group of people to do sexually promiscuous acts.
When Reuters asked for a comment, the Canadian embassy in Beijing did not respond right away, but state media said that Canadian officials were at the sentencing.
The tax bureau also said that he had to pay 600 million yuan ($83.77 million) for hiding personal income and other tax crimes.
Authorities say Wu cheated the government out of 95 million yuan in taxes from 2019 to 2020 by hiding personal income through domestic and foreign affiliated businesses. He also owed 84 million yuan in taxes that he didn’t pay.
When Wu was arrested, he was a brand ambassador for 15 companies, including Bulgari, Lancome, Louis Vuitton, and Porsche. All of these companies cut ties with him right away.
The court said Wu would be sent away, even though lawyers in China have said that this usually happens after the sentence is over.
