A sudden change has made it look like Ted Lasso season 4 is not likely to happen. It’s been almost a year since the season 3 episode of Ted Lasso aired on Apple TV+, and no one knows what will happen next in the Emmy-winning sports comedy. Even though there has been no official word of an extension, cast members and other people have hinted at the chance.
Comicbook.com now says that there is an Amazon pre-order page for a Blu-ray of Ted Lasso: The Complete Series. The item is listed as costing $84.99 and will also be released on DVD on July 30, 2024. It’s not often that a streaming show comes out on actual media, and the box set’s artwork hasn’t been shown yet. However, the fact that it’s called a full series could be interesting because it means there won’t be a fourth season of Ted Lasso.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Remains a Possibility:
In a Deadline-moderated panel at Canada’s Banff World Media Festival, Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman Channing Dungey said that the show might be renewed for a fourth season.
Dungey says that Apple wants Ted Lasso to keep going in some way, whether it’s a real Season 4 or a new show set in the same world.
Jason Sudeikis, the star, “is open to the idea,” but she made it clear that it has to be “the right idea” for it to happen.
The company doesn’t want to make new seasons “just because of more.” Instead, they want to because the show still has stories that need to be told:
“We’ve had conversations about all of the above. I think Jason Sudeikis is open to the idea, but I think he wants to have the right idea, which I appreciate it. We at Warner Bros. appreciate, Apple appreciates, because it’s the sort of thing where you don’t want to go do more, just for the sake of more, you want to go do more, because you actually have something to say, you have a story that you want to tell. We’ll see what happens.“
Can We Expect Ted Lasso Season 4?
For Season 4, Jason Sudeikis would have to come back as Ted Lasso’s famous football-turned-soccer teacher. He is the show’s heart and soul.
If there is a Season 4, the star told Deadline in 2022 that it would depend on “more factors than [himself],” but he did say that the “response has been overwhelming” from fans who want more of the story:
“I don’t know, it’s up to more factors than myself. The response has been overwhelming. We have a tremendous group of writers, actors, people in production and post-production, all of those thrown in the jambalaya of possibility. I couldn’t say yes or no. I know this part of the show is what it’s supposed to be. I apologize for not giving you a direct answer because that’s more helpful for headlines. If I knew, I wouldn’t tell you.“
He also said that he and the Ted Lasso team “get along with each other…as artists and people,” which he thinks is the best reason for Season 4:
Figuring out how to get Sudeikis’ Coach Lasso back to England after going back to the US to see his son and ex-wife would be the hardest part of the story.
But because the show has so many award-winning supporting characters and the Season 3 ending set up a lot of plot threads, at least a couple of spin-off ideas are possible where Sudeikis plays a smaller part.
What to Expect from Ted Lasso Spin-Offs?
An easy choice for a Ted Lasso spin-off would be one that follows AFC Richmond’s new coaching team as they try to win the Premier League title.
Brett Goldstein played Roy Kent, who took over Lasso’s role in the Season 3 ending. Coach Beard, played by Brendan Hunt, and Nathan Shelley, played by Nick Mohammed, led the team to more success. Season 4 might be the right chance to get back to the top after how close they were to winning it all in Season 3.
Also, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) and Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) are seen building the basis for a women’s team under the AFC Richmond name.
They could easily be the focus of a new show that starts from scratch and features a whole new group of female football players who want to do as well as their male peers.
Ted Lasso has a lot of ideas for future stories, whether they are for Season 4 or a spin-off. It doesn’t matter what choice is made. There is only one question left: Will Apple TV+, Sudeikis, and the team at hand be able to “believe” in another round of sports?
After getting 92% and 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, the first two seasons were a big hit. Season 3, on the other hand, was more of a slow-burner hit, getting only 82% on the review aggregator. Ted Lasso Season 3 was also the most-watched original series of 2023, even though Netflix and Prime Video had many more subscribers than Apple TV+ and filled out the Nielsen Top 10 chart.
